Learning how to build trust and respect privacy in the IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly evolving: new and innovative solutions across a number of different markets are seemingly unveiled on a daily basis. But as the IoT grows and connected devices and services proliferate, it is becoming more apparent that there are factors which could potentially inhibit growth.
The issue of maximising connection efficiency between devices, has already been addressed by the GSMA in the form of the GSMA Connection Efficiency Guidelines, which have already been enthusiastically received by operators and other ecosystem players.
Yet as the IoT moves forward, addressing privacy issues may well be key in determining the extent to which consumers embrace connected life. People will need to trust the devices and services they use and will come to expect similar standards across the market. For this reason, all ecosystem players have a joint interest in ensuring that consumers’ privacy needs and expectations are met.
The Connected Living programme is therefore proud to be hosting an interactive trust and privacy workshop, taking place in Shanghai on July 14th in the run up to Mobile World Congress Shanghai. The workshop will focus on the importance of trust and privacy in the Internet of Things (IoT) as it continues to scale. This event is rare opportunity to discuss the issue of privacy and trust in the IoT with world leading experts in this field.
Key questions include:

  • What are the key privacy considerations for IoT Service providers?
  • Why is privacy an increasingly ‘strategic’ issue rather than a mere ‘compliance’ one?
  • How are consumer’s attitudes towards their privacy changing?
  • What’s the role of regulation and self-regulation in ensuring privacy?
  • How can the industry work together to promote trust?
