Mobile to fuel next generation connected cars

One of the centrepieces of the GSMA Innovation City has always been a showcase of the latest connected Car technology. It is through this familiar transport medium that visitors are given a glimpse of a ‘connected future’ in the context of something they already know.

This year, the GSMA is proud to host the Jaguar F-Pace, in what is one of the first exhibitions of a connected car that will use the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification. The Specification will provide enhanced security for a range of connected services, enable the vehicle to be connected by multiple Operators and allow the selection of local Operators’ connectivity at the vehicle’s country of destination.

The demonstration at the GSMA Innovation City shows a range of innovative connected services available in Jaguar Land Rover’s latest connected vehicle. The F-Pace’s InControl Touch Pro, Jaguar Land Rover’s multi-function and multi-channel infotainment system, allows the driver to easily access navigation services, climate settings, eco data and a media system via in-car touch screens. The F-Pace also contains a call function, and a GPS system that can be integrated with SMS or email to keep friends and family members updated on arrival times.

Jaguar Land Rover will be one of the first automakers to adopt the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification in its vehicles, and will be commercially available from 2018. The exhibition follows the recent announcement that a series of major auto manufacturers are to adopt the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification. 22 operators have already launched GSMA Embedded SIM solutions, including AIS, América Móvil, AT&T, Bell Canada, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat Group, Indosat, KPN, MTN, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Rogers, Swisscom, Tele2, Telefónica Brasil, Telefónica Group, TeliaSonera, Taiwan Mobile, Telenor, TIM, Vodafone as well as members of the Bridge Alliance and the Global M2M Association.

The Connected Car market is one of the main growth areas of M2M and IoT and a sector in which operators will play a key role. According to Machina Research, the total global revenue for the Connected Car sector stood at $37.5 billion in 2015, and is predicted to increase massively to $151.8 billion in 2020.

Automotive industry adopts GSMA Embedded SIM Specification to accelerate connected car market

General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault Nissan, Scania and Volvo Cars Support Specification for Delivery of Range of Connected Vehicle Services; 22 Live Operator Solutions Now Commercially Available

London: Leading companies from across the automotive and transportation sector are supporting the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification to help accelerate the growth of the connected car market, the GSMA announced today. The interoperable specification has been backed by international brands including General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault Nissan, Scania and Volvo Cars, and will enable automakers to remotely provision connectivity over the air to vehicles with an operator of their choice. It will help to deliver a range of in-vehicle services such as infotainment, real-time navigation, insurance and breakdown services, as well as telematics and remote diagnostics. The use of the specification will also help to quickly connect vehicles with local operators, regardless of where the cars are manufactured.

“The GSMA Embedded SIM Specification has progressed from the first availability of commercial solutions to industry adoption in a very short space of time. The automotive sector is set for huge growth and it is clear that a common, global standard will help mobile operators to provide scalable, reliable and secure connectivity to vehicles regardless of location,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “This approach will help car manufacturers offer any type of in-car connected service through a single SIM, which can be provisioned with the profile of a mobile operator once the car is shipped, as well as at the end of a contract, without the SIM needing to be changed.”

The connected car market is set for exponential growth. Gartner Research has forecast that one in five vehicles will have some form of wireless network connection by 2020, equating to more than 250 million connected vehicles in service1. Additionally, Machina Research estimates that the total number of connections in the connected car market will grow at a CAGR of 31 per cent from 182 million in 2015 to 693 million in 20202. Analyst house Berg Insight also notes that in-vehicle embedded telematics systems shipped 1.9 million units in 2014, a figure that is expected to reach 15 million by 20203.

To date, 22 mobile operators worldwide have commercially launched solutions based on the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification. New operators to launch commercial solutions include AIS, América Móvil, KPN, MTN, Rogers Wireless, Swisscom, Taiwan Mobile, Telenor, TIM as well as members of the Bridge Alliance and the Global M2M Association. The adoption of an interoperable specification will reduce fragmentation and help the industry to take advantage of the Internet of Things, an addressable market estimated to be worth US$1.1 trillion by 2020 according to Machina Research4. AT&T, Bell Canada, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Indosat, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Tele2, Telefónica Brasil, Telefónica Group, TeliaSonera and Vodafone have already made commercial solutions available to the market.

GSMA Intelligence research highlights that 76 per cent of global M2M connections are now serviced by mobile operators that are deploying or are committed to the GSMA solution, underscoring the momentum behind the specification5. GSMA Connected Living Programme at Mobile World Congress 2016
The GSMA’s Connected Living Programme will showcase the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification at Mobile World Congress 22-25 February in Barcelona. There will be a number of live demonstrations of the specification in the GSMA Innovation City located at Stands 3A11 and 3A31 in Hall 3, Fira Gran Via, including scenarios from Bridge Alliance and the Global M2M Association. GSMA Embedded SIM Specification underpins Mercedes-Oberthur Technologies deal

Yesterday, Oberthur Technologies (OT), a leading global provider of embedded security solutions and Daimler AG, one of the world’s largest auto manufacturers of commercial vehicles, announced a new partnership to connect Mercedes-Benz passenger cars based on the GSMA’s Embedded SIM Specification.

The solution will be implemented in Daimler’s vehicles as early as March 2016, beginning with the new Mercedes-Benz E-class. The GSMA Specification will allow operators to provide connectivity for all such automobiles, enabling each car with services such as emergency calls, remote maintenance, telediagnostiscs, live traffic information, remote door locking and entertainment.

Because OT’s solution is fully compliant with the GSMA specification, it will enable remote subscription management technology, meaning that a mobile network operator can be selected ‘over-the-air’ without changing any physical components. As a result, the German car manufacturer will have access to a much greater market of operators across the globe. Ultimately, this makes it much easier for the auto manufacturer to ship market-ready connected cars to any location on the globe.

This partnership follows news in October 2015, stating that nearly 75 per cent of global M2M connections are now serviced by mobile operators that are deploying or are committed to the GSMA solution. This collaborative project underscores the momentum behind the specification, and as the number of adopters of the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification increases, economies of scale will drive down the cost.

Success of GSMA Embedded SIM Spec in automotive sector will open up new markets

The GSMA Embedded SIM Specification has been widely endorsed by both Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and automakers as a means to accelerate the growth of the connected car market. The advantages are clear and many; for example, infotainment, telematics and remote diagnostics will be the source of new revenue streams for operators, and for automotive OEMs, the cost of installing a GSMA Embedded SIM Spec during the manufacturing process is 10 per cent of the cost of installing a propriety solution.

Ultimately, MNOs, automakers and industry experts all seem to agree on the logic that the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification will reduce market fragmentation and enable the market to scale, thereby bringing advantages to all players in the ecosystem. This mutual enthusiasm is reflected in a number of partnerships that operators have secured with automakers and related service providers over the last few months.

This manoeuvring falls in line with connected car forecasts, such as Machina Research’s latest prediction, that the number of connected cars globally, will jump from 162 million in 2015, to 689 million in 2020, with sales alone rising from €26 billion to €109 billion over the same period.

Yet despite the industry’s focus on the impact of the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification on the automotive sector, decision makers should consider what impact its success will have on other verticals. As the popularity and success of the connected car becomes increasingly apparent, key players such as OEMs in other verticals will be encouraged to adopt and implement the Specification.

Indeed, this point was raised recently in Beecham Research’s report, Benefits Analysis of GSMA Embedded SIM Specification on the Mobile Enabled M2M Industry which asserts that the success of Embedded SIM in the auto sector will bleed into a number of other verticals such as consumer electronics, transport and utilities.

According to Beecham, solutions and products in these verticals will reach the market after 2016, sometime after connected cars use the GSMA Specification.  There are numerous industries that are in a prime position take off, such as the Bicycle industry, where 132 million bikes around the world are sold each year. What is interesting here is that the GSMA Embedded SIM Specification may well have particular benefits to each sector, with several different use cases demonstrated earlier this year’s at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona.

Despite other verticals being slower to adopt the Specification, key players in m2m would do well to forge partnerships and collaborative agreements in order to strengthen their position in advance. Telco titans race to capture connected car market

Major operators AT&T, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom are stepping up their efforts in the automotive sector, having recently partnered with a series of automakers and automotive IoT service providers, according to Jeremy Cowan of M2MNow.

AT&T have recently partnered with Autonet Mobile, the Connected Car app developer and Airbiquity, the end-to-end platform provider, in order to strengthen its position in the Connected Car Market. The Autonet system enables users to, lock and unlock a vehicle remotely, manage check car maintenance reports, and enjoy in-car WiFi, powered by 4G LTE wireless connectivity. Airbiquity’s Choreo cloud-based services delivery platform will enable selected aftermarket connected car program end user registration and device management.

Since Vodafone’s acquisition of Cobra Automotive Technologies in August of 2014, the operator’s has formed a number of partnerships with auto manufacturers in Europe and Asia. Vodafone Automotive provides automotive products and services – which include in-car telematics, stolen vehicle tracking and usage-based insurance solutions – for vehicle manufacturers, insurance companies and fleets. In Europe, Vodafone Automotive’s customers include Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Ducati, Ferrari, Gruppo Piaggio, Infiniti, Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren, Mercedes Benz Trucks, and in Asia, the operator has partnered with Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Honda, Renault, Nissan, Volvo, and Volkswagen Group.

In Canada, Deutsche Telekom led a funding round for Mojio, the connected car platform, in which the company secured US$8 million. Mojio is an open platform that aims to help drivers plan and record trips, share driving information with friends and family and better understand their car’s health. Operator, DT, clearly views Mojio as a scalable, customisable and cost-effective option for resource management in its broader plans in the connected car market.

The connected car market is widely forecast to grow rapidly in the next few years, with operators in a unique position to provide connectivity and thereby create new revenue streams. According to analyst house Machina Research, the number of connected cars globally, will jump from 162 million in 2015 to 689 million in 2020, with sales rising from €26 billion to €109 billion in the same period.

Exploring the Innovation City: Partner Showcases at MWC 15

  • Multiple Connected Car demonstrations highlight market potential

The GSMA partner showcases at the GSMA Innovation City this year feature the most state-of-the-art products and services in Machine to Machine (M2M) and the Internet of Things (IoT).Most striking about Innovation City this year, and Mobile World Congress in general is the growing number automakers showcasing connected cars. The Innovation City featured four cars on display- one displayed by Vodafone and the other four exhibited by AT&T, who clearly see massive market potential in the Connected car.

According Shane Rooney, Executive Director, Connected Living, GSMA, “Mobile World Congress…reflects the very latest mobile technology and the huge presence of automakers at the show this year demonstrates that this is fast becoming a huge growth area. Indeed, Machina Research predicts that the number of in-car mobile connections will grow from 4.3 million today to 645 million by 2024 at a CAGR of 65%. There were numerous brands including Ford, General Motors, Audi, Maserati, Porsche and Cadillac amongst others all demonstrating new in-car services using cellular connectivity such as entertainment, security and insurance”.

The centrepiece of Vodafone’s exhibition was the new Porsche Panamera, which it is providing the connectivity for to deliver a host of new capabilities across security, safety and insurance. For example, a driver can synchronise their car with their smart phone to keep themselves remotely updated with the car’s security, location, diagnostics, mileage and fuel consumption. This follows in the footsteps of Vodafone’s acquisition of automotive technologies company, Cobra in June 2014,  which has given it more focused expertise in automotive sector.

AT&T’s Connected cars are part of its broader vision for the ‘Connected Life’ which outlines  a complete user experience comprised of the Connected car and Digital Life, which is essentially the operator’s Connected home solution.

The presence of the Connected Car at the show highlights the significant role that cellular technology plays in connecting in-vehicle services such as infotainment applications, driver behaviour data, fuel consumption and diagnostics. AT&T’s Digital Life is a clear demonstration of how it is making significant inroads into the connected home by offering clear benefits to the consumer such as its security and home automation services that are managed through a smartphone app or wearable wrist device. AT&T’s commitment to M2M and IoT was underscored by the location and content of its exhibition which was exclusively based on M2M and entirely contained within the Innovation City.

KT are concentrating heavily on how M2M and the IoT can improve everyday household items and activities with a wide range of demonstrations and services. The Korean mobile network operator showcased a virtual domestic environment where you could experience different aspects of how mobile connectivity and M2M services are improving the lives of consumers.. These include: a urine sample health monitoring device, which measures blood levels, protein and blood cell levels, as well as a connected exercise bike which uses sensors attached to a person’s leg to send performance data to a smartphone and via an IP Connected TV.

Oral hygiene products company, Oral-B, showcased its connected SmartSeries electric tooth brush at Innovation City in a lifelike dental spa. The toothbrush connects to the Oral-B App, which provides real-time guidance to users brushing their teeth. The App records brushing activity and allows the brusher to share this data with dental professionals. The App also signals when the user should reduce the acceleration rate at which he/she brushes his/her teeth. Oral-B demonstrates that such results are achieved by allowing the user to view news articles or videos, for example, while they are brushing their teeth.

Sierra Wireless highlighted the role that its modules are playing in the M2M/IoT space. The organisation currently works closely with energy management company, Schneider Electric and helps them to connect electric charging terminals. Sierra also highlighted another project which uses embedded wireless modules to provide connectivity for the ‘CityTouch LightWave’ remote lighting management system project. CityTouch LightWave is a solution that allows city lights, within smart cities, to be connected. As a result, street lighting can be monitored and managed effectively so that lighting can easily adapt to both natural light and weather which in turn leads to a more efficient consumption of energy.

M2M Platform provider, Jasper, demonstrated its industrial equipment aimed at a range of verticals and designed to provide lower support costs and enable remote use. They also featured a connected vending machine which can measure the type and time of purchase for products and automatically feeds data back to the food supplier who can in turn deliver less frequent, and more catered shipments.

There were numerous experiences, demonstrations and showcases exhibited throughout the day in Innovation City which gave a rich sense of how M2M and the IoT offer a completely new user experience, particularly the journey through the mobile network using Oculus Rift. According to Andrew Parker, Marketing Director, Connected Living, GSMA “The huge number of VIPs, high profile delegates, industry figures and media personnel – which included a personal visit from the king of Spain – reflects the growing interest in this space and recognition that the IoT is now more reality than concept. Telefónica enters into M2M connectivity agreement with Tesla

The recent European agreement between Telefónica and Tesla further demonstrates the continuing growth of the connected car market. The agreement, which will enable connectivity for Tesla’s in-car infotainment telematics and remote vehicle diagnostics, will be implemented in several countries across Europe. Telefónica will provide connectivity for the Model S in Germany, to the UK on O2 and in Spain on Movistar.

Tesla is one of many car manufacturers that has recognised that the connected car will achieve mass-market penetration in a matter of years. The GSMA’s Connected Car Forecast has determined that globally, this market is expected to more than double in value by 2018 to €39 billion.

Growth is being accelerated partly by initiatives such as eCall, which is to be implemented in EU member states in the near future. The regulation stipulates that every new car must include the eCall device, which automatically dials an emergency number when it detects a serious accident. Features such as In-car navigation services, remote diagnostics, emergency call services and connected infotainment, will all be provided by Telefónica for the Tesla Model S.

Telefónica’s global M2M solution – powered by Jasper – will enable remote vehicle diagnostics that communicate information about the Tesla car’s safety, security and performance in real time. The car’s infotainment will include internet browsing and online music, two key features which are fuelling consumer demand. According to the GSMA’s forecast, the number of cars sold supporting these features will increase over sixfold to 32.1 million over the same period.

Telefónica’s latest move strengthens its position in the automotive sector, where they have established several partnerships over recent years. In 2012 Telefónica reached an agreement with OnStar, specialists in advanced data transmission technology, to provide M2M connectivity for General Motor’s vehicles.

In October, Telefónica agreed to use Zubie, another connected car service, in Brazil from mid-2015 onwards. Brazil, like many other Latin American territories, is a country where Telefónica already has direct M2M capabilities. Legislation similar to eCall, namely the Denatran 245 mandate or SIMRAV (“Sistema Integrado de Monitoramento e Registro Automático de Veículos), will facilitate the growth of the connected car market in Brazil in the coming years, and will further incentivise operators to enter into strategic partnerships in the automotive sector.
