Personal Data at Mobile World Congress 2014: Highlights

Mobile World Congress 2014 was bigger than ever with a record-breaking 85,000 attendees from 201 countries. The GSMA Personal Data Programme was involved in many activities across the event – see below for a summary of all highlights from four days.

 

 

Leading mobile operators announcing Mobile Connect initiative

At Mobile World Congress the GSMA announced the launch of a collaborative initiative, supported by leading mobile operators including Axiata Group Berhad, China Mobile, China Telecom, Etisalat, KDDI, Ooredoo, Orange, Tata Teleservices, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra and VimpelCom, to develop an innovative new service that will allow consumers to securely access a wide array of digital services using their mobile phone account for authentication. In addition to leading mobile operators, key players from across the ecosystem are among the early supporters of this initiative, including Dailymotion, Deezer, Gemalto, Giesecke & Devrient, Morpho, Oberthur and VALID.

GSMA Seminar: Personal Data – Enabling Trust and Creating Value from Digital Identity

On Tuesday the GSMA hosted a seminar on Personal Data which was free to all MWC attendees. Interest in the seminar was running high, with people queuing outside to get a seat. Featured speakers and panellists included Jean-Paul Cottet (Executive Vice President Orange), David Rennie (UK Government Digital Service) and many others. The agenda covered the strategic rationale for action from an operator perspective, included an overview onto the digital identity market and shed light on the needs of consumers and service providers in regards to digital identity and personal data protection.

 

Ministerial Programme Session: Mobile Identity – Seizing the Opportunity

In this session, policy makers and regulators heard about the value of digital identity services for citizens, business and government, drawing on the experience of mobile signature services in Finland and internationally. Some of the featured speakers included Alexander Stubb (Finnish Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade), Khalifa Al Shamsi (Chief Digital Services Officer of Etisalat Group) and Tiit Tammiste (Chief Technology Officer, EMT).

 

Ministerial Programme Session: Middle East and North Africa Regional Summit

This session highlighted the role of mobile operators’ play in the region as providers of mobile-enabled future technology solutions across various areas. This included mobile identity management to enable secure transactions as well as mobile health trends and solutions, and touched on how governments may need to rethink their policy, regulatory and legislative priorities to maximise the benefits of these emerging technologies for their citizens. Some of the featured speakers and panelists included Cynthia Gordon (Chief Commercial Officer, Ooredoo Group) and Dr Vinayak Prasad (Project Manager, Department of Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases, World Health Organization).

 

 

Identity World Map in the GSMA Connected City

The GSMA Connected City, one of the most popular attractions at Mobile World Congress, attracted 17,000 visitors over four days. At the GSMA Personal Data Programme stand visitors could experience 13 demos, 4 videos and 7 case studies on operator provided identity solutions from four different continents. The demo showcases included mobile signature solutions from Northern Europe, identity solutions which utilised web-standards from Asia and many other innovative new solutions which enable secure access while providing users with full control over their data.

 

Main Conference Session: Service Opportunities in Mobile Identity

This session brought together experts from the fields of mobile identity and privacy to discuss how mobile identity solutions are already utilised across a range of services at http://samedayessays.org/paper-editing/. it also addressed the challenges for service providers in managing transactions securely and ensuring customer privacy.

 

Main Conference Session: Developing the Ecosystem for Mobile Identity services

This session answered several questions: How can industry stakeholders collaborate to drive the development of the ecosystem and the use of mobile identity solutions? How can monetisation opportunities be maximised?

 

Developer Workshop @ WIPJam: Leveraging the power of mobile identity – Increase security, simplicity and reach of your apps

GSMA and WIP had joined forces to organise the best and biggest developer event during Mobile World Congress. As part of WIPJam, developers could join this 3-hour-workshop to learn how to benefit from mobile and operator-provided identity solutions, and also about the benefits of utilising web-standards like Open ID Connect. The agenda features great speakers from Google, Apigee, Deutsche Telekom, WSO2 and many others.
