On November 27th and 28th 2012 the GSMA will open the doors to its first Connected Women event in Brussels. Hosted by the GSMA’s own Anne Bouverot, Director General and Member of the Board, this is the first event dedicated to supporting the growth of influential women in an industry that has revolutionised the lives of billions of people.
The event will see some of the industry’s most successful women and men champion the initiative to attract more female talent to the mobile industry and communicate the challenges and rewards, barriers, best practices, pitfalls and pinnacles. The impressive programme aims to:
- Ignite global interest in the cause
- Inspire the industry to take positive action
- Catalyse those who can into acting to encourage others
- Create momentum to increase the number of women working in and with mobile
- Communicate what is already happening and discuss the challenges ahead
- Cement commitment to tackling these challenges

On Tuesday, following the mid-afternoon networking break, we will be holding an interactive session to connect those who are interested in becoming or having a mentor. The session will cover all the important areas to consider in order to ensure mentoring relationships work well. An experienced mentor will also host a Q&A session during the workshop.
On Wednesday morning, we will be offering a personal development opportunity through speed coaching sessions. Offered on a first-come-first-serve basis, those who sign up will have the chance to gain a new or different insight into a current challenge. Our coaches’ ‘focused and incisive questions’ will stimulate your thinking and help shape your future development.

Anne Bouverot is Director General and Member of the Board of the GSMA. Anne brings to the GSMA a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in the highly dynamic mobile industry. With a deep understanding of the opportunities and the challenges facing mobile operators today, she leads the GSMA in driving strategic programmes and initiatives for the benefit of its membership. Before joining the GSMA, Anne was Executive Vice President for Mobile Services for France Telecom Orange. In that role, she defined the strategic priorities and led transformation programmes for the mobile business, and was also responsible for the selection of mobile devices sold to customers with mobile offers. In 2010, this represented more than 120 million mobile customers, 29 million new mobile phones distributed and more than 14 billion euro in revenue. She previously was responsible for international business development at France Telecom Orange, and her achievements include the privatisation of Telkom Kenya, new mobile licences in Armenia and Tunisia, and partnerships in Portugal and UAE. Prior to France Telecom Orange, Anne led a 600-person business unit of Equant and was responsible for developing IT services for Equant’s multinational business customers. She began her career in telecommunications as project manager for Telmex in Mexico in 1991. Anne holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and computer science from the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and an M.S. degree from Telecom Paris. She has served on the Board of the GSMA, representing France Telecom Orange, for the past two years. She also serves as a non-executive director of Groupama, a major French insurance company, and as a non-executive director of Edenred, the world leader of prepaid corporate services.
As Chief Strategy Officer for the GSMA, Hyunmi Yang is responsible for working with the GSMA’s operator members in identifying opportunities that will advance the development of the mobile communications industry.
Before joining the GSMA, Ms. Yang served most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer for KT. When joining KT as an Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of the Mobile Business Group in 2009, Ms. Yang was noted for being the first female executive in the history of telecommunications in Korea. Later responsible for both the mobile and fixed line businesses as a Chief Customer Officer, she had overall ownership of the master customer portfolio, development of a group customer loyalty programme and overall customer strategies. Further, with her unique blend of careers in the fields of telecom and finance, Ms. Yang has led the way and set the pace with regards to telecom-banking convergence services such as smart wallet and mobile money transfer services, as well as NFC.
Prior to KT, she was Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Shinhan Bank in Korea, where she led marketing strategies and product development. Ms. Yang has also held senior management roles at American Express in New York, where she applied data-driven insights to marketing strategies and loyalty programmes.
Ms. Yang holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics and statistics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and M.S. and B.S. degrees in mathematics from Seoul National University in Seoul.
Siki is an independent financial journalist and producer. She is currently the host of Morning Talk on SAFM – a talkshow, which deals with politics, life and finance between 9am and 12 midday, Monday to Friday. She is also a presenter on Summit TV, South Africa’s premier business channel. She also co-anchored SABC3′s Africa Inc., a show looking at Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa. Previously, she was a senior business news anchor at CNBC Africa. She is a highly sought-after moderator and facilitator, having done work for the GSMA at two of their Mobile Money Summits, and the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. She has covered major African markets and acted as a moderator at the World Economic Forum on Africa, the IBSA Editor’s Conference in India and the African Green Revolution Conference in Oslo, Norway. Siki is also a sought-after MC, having hosted government, business and award functions in South Africa. She has won a variety of awards for her journalism including the Telkom ICT Journalist of the Year award – TV News Category and the Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year: TV Category (2006 & 2010).
Vicki MacLeod, Secretary General, GTWN
Vicki MacLeod is an international communications policy and regulatory consultant with extensive experience in both the private and public sectors, with special focus over the past decade on broadband and internet policy issues. A former Executive Director of the London-based International Institute of Communications (IIC), she provides international regulatory consulting services to Telstra Corporation of Australia. Prior to her work with Telstra, Vicki was engaged in a variety of policy roles for the Australian Government in Canberra, which gives her a broad perspective on the management of current issues. Vicki’s interests extend from fixed and mobile broadband, to internet governance, cloud computing, converging services and OTT applications. She is an active member of the communications group of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) of the OECD in Paris, where the global policy benchmark for the ICT industry is set. Vicki also specialises in the economic and social impact of broadband investment, including the benefits for SMEs and consumers. She contributes to promoting the role of the ICT industry as an enabler of economic and social development for women, through her work with the Global Telecom Women’s Network, the Australian Girls in ICT Project Group, and the Women in Mobiles advisory group of the GSMA.
Gabi Zedlmayer, Vice President Sustainability & Social Innovation, Hewlett-Packard
Gabi Zedlmayer drives sustainability and social innovation programs aligned with HP’s business strategy. She leads a global team of experts focused on solving social issues in collaboration with non-profit organizations, governments, customers and partners. Her goal is to create sustainable solutions that address societal challenges in the areas of education, healthcare, and the environment.
In addition, Zedlmayer co-leads HP’s Global Citizenship Council and serves as a member of the board of directors of Junior Achievement Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the EU Commission e-skills leadership board, the Computer Science Advisory Board of the University of People, and the board of directors of Hewlett-Packard GmbH, Germany.
She also is a member of the Executive Diversity Forum for HP in EMEA and of the Women’s Council of HypoVereinsbank UNICREDIT. In 2011 she was honoured by Newsweek and the Daily Beast as one of 150 “women who shake the world”. In 2012 she named by FastCompany as a member of the League of Extraordinary Women and was awarded with the DLDWomen Impact Award.
Previously, Zedlmayer was vice president of corporate marketing in the EMEA region at HP, responsible for comprehensive global marketing strategy. She led regional branding efforts and marketing initiatives, including corporate communications, internal communications, brand and digital strategy, advertising and global citizenship.
Since joining the company in 1987, Zedlmayer has held several positions within HP EMEA, including head of corporate affairs; vice president of marketing services, corporate marketing and customer relationship management for the Enterprise Systems Group (ESG); and general manager of ESG marketing and solutions.
Zedlmayer earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in finance from the University of Miami.
Thierry Zylberberg, Executive Vice President, Orange Healthcare
Thierry Zylberberg is Executive Vice President of the France Telecom/Orange Group, and Head of Orange Healthcare, the Group’s Healthcare Division that he created in 2007. Orange Healthcare aims to develop e-health activities in France and internationally leveraging the France Telecom-Orange Group’s expertise in Information and Communication Technologies.
Thierry is a widely recognized thought leader on the transformational impact of new technologies on the healthcare ecosystem. He frequently speaks at a wide range of conferences on the subject of m-Health and e-Health.
He was recognized by the French Magazine L’Usine Nouvelle as “one of the 100 leaders who will transform the Industry in 2011″. He previously served as Executive Vice President, in charge of Strategic Partnerships for the FT/Orange Group. He has held various positions inside and outside the France Telecom Group, among which Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Major Accounts Division at France Telecom, General Manager of France Telecom Mexico, which was responsible for managing the French carrier’s investments in Telmex and providing Telmex with assistance and advice on its newly deregulated markets. He has also worked as the Head of Marketing for Professional Products and Services at France Telecom and was in charge of the development of such products as Numeris, PABX, and microcomputer communication. He was the driving force behind the creation of the THESEUS Institute, a business school dedicated to studying the impact of Information Technology on corporate strategies, where he served as the managing director for several years. He is also a co-founder of the Women’s Business Mentoring Initiative, an organisation founded by Stanford Business School alumni which aims to help women entrepreneurs develop business projects in France.
Thierry is a graduate of Stanford University, the École Polytechnique and the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications.
Susan Carroll Schorr, Head of Special Initiatives Division, ITU/BDT
Susan Carroll Schorr joined the ITU in March 2000, working with ITU Member States through 2008 to promote effective ICT regulation. In early 2009 she was given a new portfolio, promoting the digital inclusion of people with special needs, including indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, women and girls and youth and children. Ms. Schorr led the 2012 international Girls in ICT Day celebrations, which saw over 30,000 girls empowered in events in nearly 90 countries. She is the architect of the ITU Girls in ICT Portal and brainchild of the ITU “Connect a School, Connect a Community” initiative. Ms. Schorr led development of the “Making TV Accessible” and “Making Mobile Phones and Services Accessible” reports and contributed to the development of the joint ITU-G3ict e-Accessibility Toolkit, promoting the ICT accessibility agenda of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Prior to joining BDT, Ms. Schorr practiced antitrust law as an associate in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Howrey & Simon, LLP. She graduated from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987 cum laude and is a member of the California and D.C. bars.
Tina Southall, Group Diversity Director, Vodafone
Tina joined Vodafone in 2001 to lead the strategy for new media and content services on mobile. During this time, she personally spearheaded Vodafone’s proposition on content rating, access control solutions and user awareness to help create a more responsible mobile internet environment for younger users.
From 2007, she led Vodafone’s Global Enterprise sales team across Northern Europe, with P&L responsibility for 600 of Vodafone’s most significant multi-National customers. Prior to joining Vodafone, Tina was CRM Director of Avis Europe and previously held a number of senior Sales & Marketing roles at UK motoring organisation the RAC.
Tina is now a member of the Group HR leadership team, with responsibility for Diversity and Inclusion across Vodafone. She is a trustee of the Vodafone Group Foundation.
Michel Coucke, Partner, Lancor
Michel has led numerous senior executive searches for Board members, CEOs, COOs and heads of function. Clients range from start-ups to industry leaders throughout Europe and the Middle East.
Prior to joining Lancor, Michel was co-Managing Partner of the Technology and Media Practice at Whitehead Mann. Previously he worked at Heidrick & Struggles, where he managed the European Telecommunications and Internet Infrastructure Practice.
In his early career Michel was Deputy Managing Director of the Benelux countries for AT & T, with responsibility for sales, business development and customer support.
Michel earned Chemical Engineering and Business degrees from the Solvay Business School, Universite′ Libre de Bruxelles. He is also an AMP graduate from the IMD, Lausanne. He serves on the Advisory Board of Lorentz Deschamps Associates, a strategic and corporate finance advisory firm.
Lori Gonnu, CEO, Boldair Consulting International
Lori Gonnu brings strong management skills to her position as chief executive officer of Boldair Consulting International, a leading telecommunications consultancy located in France in the Paris area. In this role, Ms Gonnu oversees day-to-day operations and strives to develop new business with mobile communications providers. In addition to consulting directly with client executives, she performs due diligence analysis.
A seasoned professional, Ms Gonnu has more than 22 years of experience in the telecommunications sector. Before moving into her current position in 2011, she was executive vice president and managing director of roaming and interworking at Syniverse Technologies. For 14 years starting in 1995, she served as director international at SFR/Vodafone.
Active in the professional community, Ms Gonnu is a member of Women Corporate Directors. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from INSEAD and a master’s degree in international economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ms Gonnu attributes her success to her creativity and her communication skills, and in the future she hopes to continue to help grow Boldair Consulting. When she is not carrying out consulting duties, Ms Gonnu volunteers her time with 1001 Fontaines pour l’Avenir, an organization that brings clean water to villages in Cambodia and Madagascar.
Renate Nyborg, Global Director of Mobile, Edelman
Renate is Global Director of Edelman Mobile (www.edelmanmobile.com), the mobility arm of the world’s largest communications agency with 65 offices worldwide. We specialise in mobile marketing, social and search for mobile, building apps and mobile websites, and app marketing.
Renate was previously Head of Mobile Business Development for A&N Media (http://www.anmedia.co.uk/), owner of the Daily Mail and Metro, which launched 70+ apps in her time there. She also set up mobile games and apps publishing brand ‘Metro Apps’, originating publishing deals with leading developers.
Prior to that she ran global marketing for Poken (www.poken.com) in San Francisco, achieving sales in 52 countries purely through social media, and consulted on marketing and business development for various technology start-ups in Europe and Silicon Valley.
Renate is originally Norwegian and Dutch and is a founding member of Twestival (www.twestival.com), which has to date raised $1.75 million for over 275 causes.
Nathan Ott, Chief Executive Officer, eg.1
Following his BA in International Business, Nathan began his career in research working for a specialist executive search firm focused on the TMT and Professional Services sectors. After three years he joined Tikit, providing technology solutions to the professional services sector. In 2003 Nathan was one of the founding members of eg.1, a multi-disciplined executive search firm dedicated to the identification, engagement and integration of senior leaders into its clients – globally. Through a unique model which combines bespoke market intelligence, client understanding and clinical rigour, eg.1 is widely regarded as the pioneer of the new era in executive search.
As CEO Nathan oversees all practice areas and works with his clients on their global talent initiatives developing innovative and simple yet effective approaches to identify, engage and maintain relationships across the talent spectrum. He has a track record of integrating the diversity and inclusion agenda into the recruitment, succession planning and retention processes, recognising that although this can be challenging, it should always be straightforward. Nathan works with organisations to genuinely change the way they approach the sourcing of candidates, promoting quality talent within the firm and also thinking dynamically about the key hires it might make in the future. Most recently, one of his clients achieved the Global Innovations in Diversity Award 2012 for its partnership with eg.1 to promote and resource diverse talent.
Outside of his dedication to reinvigorate the executive search industry, Nathan’s interests include spending time with his family, (so-called) reality TV, golf and eg.1.
Ann Mei Chang, Senior Advisor for Women & Technology, US Department of State
Ann Mei Chang is the Senior Advisor for Women and Technology in the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues at the US Department of State, where she is serving as a Franklin Fellow. Prior to State, she spent 8 years as a Senior Engineering Director at Google, most recently leading product development for Emerging Markets, with a mission to bring relevant mobile and Internet services to the half of the world’s population which is not yet online. During her tenure at Google, she also led worldwide engineering for Google’s mobile applications and services, including products such as search, ads, Google Mobile Maps, GMail, YouTube, Goggles, and Voice Search across all major mobile platforms. She oversaw 20x growth of Google’s mobile business in just three years, delivering over $1B in annualized revenues.
Ann Mei has more than twenty years of engineering and leadership experience in diverse sectors of the software industry. Prior to Google, she served as the VP of Engineering at There, a high-tech startup building an online virtual world. And, while at both Apple and Macromedia, Ann Mei led engineering for the first release of Final Cut Pro, an award-winning professional video editing software product. She has also held leadership roles at several other leading Silicon Valley companies including Intuit, SGI, and a few startups.
Ann Mei is a member of the 2011 class of Henry Crown Fellows at the Aspen Institute, the GSMA mWomen Working Group, the International Steering Committee of the Mobile program at the Cherie Blair Foundation, and the Global Telecom Women’s Network International Steering Committee. She holds a BS degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Janice Hughes, Director, Redshift Strategy
Janice is a founder of several companies ranging from Spectrum Strategy with offices in eight countries worldwide and more than a hundred consultants, to hotels and restaurants and her new company Redshift. She is a global strategist and entrepreneur with a long track record of working with leaders in telecoms, mobile and entertainment. Redshift is working on a number of fascinating projects including digital media in South America, a new radio spectrum technology for faster broadband speeds and a definitive study for Ofcom on Connected TV, the devices, apps and the content ecosystem that is emerging from new operating platforms.
In addition to providing strategic management advice and technology insights, she also invests via a family fund in small and medium sized ventures and in young people and their businesses.
Janice read economics at Cambridge University and has worked for several years in Africa in development and refugee programmes. She is the UK President of Medecins du Monde and is on the Corporate Advisory Board of the Tate.
Christel Heydemann, Executive Vice-President Corporate Human Resources & Transformation, Alcatel-Lucent
Christel Heydemann is Executive Vice-President Corporate Human Resources & Transformation for Alcatel-Lucent and a member of the Executive Management Committee.
Prior to this, she held a number of executive roles including Vice President of the Strategic Alliance with HP, member of the Alcatel-Lucent France Executive Committee responsible for Sales Account Teams in France, and key account manager for SFR (Vodafone France, now Vivendi Group) and France Telecom/Orange.
She joined Alcatel-Lucent in 1999, in the Project finance team of the Chief Financial Office. She began her career at the Boston Consulting Group in Paris.
Christel is a graduate of the French Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.
Isabella De Michelis di Slonghello, Vice President, Public Policy and Government Affairs, Qualcomm
Isabella De Michelis di Slonghello, serves as vice president, public policy and government affairs at Qualcomm. In this role she leads the company’s public affairs and regulatory agenda in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, including EU affairs in Brussels.
Mrs. De Michelis joined Qualcomm in 2002 as director of government affairs. In 2010 she was promoted to vice president of government affairs and became a member of the Qualcomm European management team.
Prior to joining Qualcomm, Mrs. De Michelis worked for internet technology vendor Cisco Systems Inc. She has also held senior roles with Elsacom – a subsidiary of Finmeccanica; Iridium LLC (a satellite consortium made of Motorola and several worldwide telecom companies); Telecom Italia and Telespazio. Before joining Telespazio she interned at the European Commission, DG Competition.
She serves as company representative to IDATE (France), Digital Europe (Brussels); Intellect (UK), Assinform (Italy), AMCHAM EU (The American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union) and OECD BIAC. She is also a member of the Alumni Association of IUHEI (The Graduate Institute of International Studies); the European Women’s Competition Network and a Board Member of the Women in Leadership Network (WIL).
Mrs. De Michelis graduated from Geneva University (Law and Economics). She holds a master’s degree from IUHEI, having specialised in international economics and another from the Institut Universitari d’Estudis Europeus (IUEE) in European competition law. She holds an MBA from Scuola Superiore G. Reiss Romoli (the post graduate institution owned by former STET Group now Telecom Italia).
Catrine Düsing, Head of Global Talent Management for Business Unit Networks, Ericsson
Catrin has extensive international experience from various senior leadership roles within Ericsson. She has just assumed the responsibility as Head of Global Talent Management for Business Unit Networks after spending three years as VP HR&O in Silicon Valley, US. She has also served as VP HR&O for five years in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and spent four years based in Kula Lumpur. In all her roles, diversity and inclusion have been integrated parts of her daily agenda.
