Empowering people everywhere with independent news on global events, Germany’s Deutsche Welle (DW) has taken a further step to enable greater access to key global news through its partnership with London-based tech company ONEm Communications.
Headquartered in Bonn, DW provides a German and European perspective on global news, promotes exchange and understanding between cultures and provides access to the German language. DW fulfills this mission by producing informative content in 30 languages along with a full range of television, radio and online services. DW is known for its in-depth, reliable news and information combined with solid background and analysis.
The partnership with ONEm complements DW’s mission to improve access to information as it enables DW to deliver fact-based, quality journalism, to an even larger audience, reaching people who do not have internet access. DW content is available in over 30 languages, with the multilingual capabilities of the ONEm platform it means that users can read or listen to the news in their own language, express their own views and even contribute local information.
By providing valuable content and services through text and audio, ONEm enables millions of people to access information wherever they are in the world, even when they lack internet access or the cost of mobile data and a smart phone is prohibitive. Partnering with ONEm means that people can interact with DW news for free, through any mobile phone wherever they are in the world, regardless of internet connectivity.
To start, users will text #DW to the ONEm platform and straight away, will receive a text back with a menu of options. Users can browse through this personalised news menu and select a story to read. They can also search key words or topics with the platform returning a list of results.
Unlike the internet, ONEm has a truly global reach. Sixty percent of the world are still offline and do not have access to reliable internet. This means that millions of people are missing out on information and services currently only available through the internet. ONEm works through the mobile operator and has created an innovative solution using what people already available to them, text and audio. Content providers are now able to reach and empower an even wider audience through their information and services.
The partnership is the beginning of a great journey between DW and ONEm to bring multilingual unbiased up-to-date news content available to everyone globally through all mobile phones.
Marco Maass, Head of Global Partnerships from DW stated: “The partnership with ONEm is a great opportunity for DW to increase our reach in key markets like Africa, where the Internet coverage is not as high as in other parts of the world. Working with ONEm and their technology will enable us to bring unbiased news and information to people without access to the Internet.”
Christopher Richardson, CEO at ONEm commented “DW is a great addition to our news and languages offering. We will explore how to work with DW to offer these services to the millions of people who have no access to the internet”.
ONEm a global mobile service that enables the mobile operator’s subscriber interactive access to rich knowledge base content via voice and SMS. ONEm is a company focused on developing an ecosystem that enables these core assets to reach their true potential. In the face of relentless internet innovation, ONEm sees an opportunity to provide Mobile Operators with a new channel that is complementary to their existing business. ONEm creates a new user experience by bringing to ordinary mobiles a capability so far only enjoyed by internet-enabled devices. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org
