Member Press Release

The market for classified advertising has fundamentally changed the buying habits of millions of people by offering convenience and increasing the market size for both buyers and sellers. ONEm has created Postboard, an interactive classified service which will increase this market even further. ONEm is delighted to announce its partnership with Afribaba, a fast growing classifieds business. This partnership will enable millions of people to access classified ads on their mobile phones regardless of their internet connectivity, empowering people to explore new opportunities to buy or sell products, recruit or apply for jobs and browse local deals.

This is a first, by increasing the reach of Afribaba, and enabling millions more people to benefit from the buying and selling platform, ONEm and Afribaba are closing the digital gap, between those fortunate enough to be able to afford smart phones and can access the internet and those who are not. This will be hugely beneficial across Africa, where just 1 in 5 people have access to the internet (AfAI, 2016). Through the ONEm platform, Afribaba can be accessed by both smartphones as well as feature phones without needing WiFi or mobile data. In a continent, where there are still 750 million feature phones in use, enabling people to access Afribaba through their feature phones, will be of huge benefit and increase economic opportunities for Africans. ONEm have come up with a solution to connect millions of Africans with what they already have – SMS and audio.

CEO of Afribaba, Jacques Temgo launched Afribaba to help people buy and sell locally with the aim of inclusivity. After leaving his home country Cameroon, Jacques has been keen to do something that helps people in his home country and throughout Africa. Afribaba is already used in many countries including Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Kenya, Nigeria, Egypt and South Africa. People can browse for a range of different things including jobs, housing, cars, electricals and furniture. The partnership with ONEm fits closely with Afribaba’s goal of becoming 100% accessible from all corners of Africa regardless of traditional social and economical boundaries.

The partnership with ONEm means users will soon be able to enjoy the same functionality enjoyed by those who are able to access the internet, being able to connect buyers and sellers through their mobile phone. Users will be able to search ads by keyword or category and browse products and services locally and nationally.

Jacques Temgo, CEO of Afribaba, stated, “The partnership with ONEm is a big step towards my dream because millions more people all across Africa will access afribaba.com website in their country simply using SMS and without internet connection. And I think ONEm is the perfect fit for the problematic internet connection in most African countries.”

Christopher Richardson, CEO of ONEm, commented, “The creation of classified ads had a fundamental impact on the retail industry for both customers and vendors. With the advent of the internet, this business model has gone from strength to strength and our latest partnership, with Afribaba, now means that an even greater step change has be created. The ONEm platform enables anyone with smartphones and even non-smartphones to enjoy the benefits of being able to search for products or services and being connected directly with the vendor, this generates a huge new market of opportunity.”
