Written in partnership with Eseye Ltd and with the kind review of PortMoni, this report aims to provide a high-level assessment of the stages which innovative enterprises go through when creating new connected utility systems and infrastructure, from business concept to roll out. The process is shown in the graph below.
The report looks to answer a few of the following questions:
- What are the main stages of the journey from prototyping to rollout?
- What types of connectivity enable machines to communicate?
- How can mobile operators, as partners, support this journey?
It also provides recommendations to service providers and MNOs, highlighting the pitfalls to avoid in order to go through a successful IoT development journey.
We based our analysis on emerging decentralised solutions, especially from 10 GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) Utilities-funded projects:Â Village Infrastructure Angels (VIA), KopaGas, ME SOLshare, Kamworks, M-KOPA, SteamaCo, eWatertap, Upande, Sanergy and CityTaps. These ten enterprises have chosen to leverage mobile-enabled IoT solutions to deliver utility services in emerging markets, especially to underserved populations.
