    Today 2.4 Billion people still lack access to improved sanitation and more people have access to mobile phones than toilets. This report aims to outline how mobile channels can support sanitation service delivery while building new engagement models with customers in underserved settings. With the transition to the Sustainable Development Goals setting a dedicated target of achieving universal sanitation access by 2030, the time is ripe to harness the role that mobile can play in improving sanitation access for the underserved.

    Making the most out of your data: A case study on NextDrop

    Earlier this year, the Mobile for Development Impact team delivered a study on NextDrop, an M4D Utilities grantee. The purpose of the DFID-funded study was to analyse NextDrop’s engagement with two key stakeholders – end-users and valvemen – and propose recommendations to increase overall engagement and improve quality of service. The study applied advanced data analytics on NextDrop’s existing transactional data. Qualitative and quantitative research was also conducted. Three routes forward were envisioned for NextDrop and recommendations were developed for each.

    From New Scientist. Published 26 May 2012. Staff at Morganster Hospital, which serves a remote community in Zimbabwe’s Masvingo province, used to sleep fitfully. If the power failed and a back-up generator was offline – common problems in the impoverished nation – they would have to jump out of bed and drive for 26 kilometres to stash their stock of life-saving vaccines in a fridge in the provincial capital. But those days are over, thanks to a pilot project that is testing a simple idea floated in the pages of New Scientist.
