Mobile Identity Interest Group Meeting in Finland and Estonia

On 16th – 19th September, the GSMA Mobile Identity programme held its Global Interest Group meeting, which was held over three days in the two locations of Helsinki, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia. The event was a large success, with over 60 attendees from member operators across Europe, Asia and Latin America, who came to experience the live mobile identity services brought to market by leading mobile network operators in these two nations.

In Finland, subscribers of all three leading operators are actively using Mobile ID to login to and authentication transactions for over 300 services in different sectors ranging from finance and healthcare to even online dating services. In this country, the three operators established a unique circle of trust agreement which enabled a shared, common platform for the authentication of users to third party service at http://samedayessays.org/ providers, irrespective of the network operator to which they subscribe.

Estonia also provides an impressive example of what is possible if telecom companies and governments work together, where Mobile ID is widely used as an extension of the national citizen e-ID card, allowing citizens to conduct a broad range of legal and commercial transactions such as registering a business or land, submitting tax forms and accessing e-Pensions, e-Banking and e-healthcare, directly from their mobile device. The GSMA extends a special thank-you to the hosts of the event, Elisa and EMT, for their warm generosity in hosting the attendees and providing key insights into the success of their Mobile ID services.

The GSMA has produced two case studies on these leading examples, which can be found on the GSMA Resources page.

The sessions opened with presentations from the banking, online commerce and government sectors, demonstrating the significant role that Mobile Identity can play in building and supporting the digital economy. Organisations such as the FIDO Alliance, Mobey Forum and Merrill Lynch also gave their perspectives on where they see the trends in digital identity and the value for mobile network operators to play a key role in delivering secure and trusted identity services of research paper. These were followed by presentations from some of the leading operators who have launched Mobile Identity services in their own markets, who shared some of their knowledge and best practices with the participants. Finally, the sessions closed with a perspective from government on the tangible socioeconomic and commercial benefits that collaboration between operator and governments can bring to citizens in the digital age. In total, 17 speakers representing a wide range of organisations participated in the two-day session, including:
