Empowering the next mobile generation
Our mission is to promote the positive, safe and responsible use of mobile services by young people.
Mobile technology offers young people many new ways to learn, engage and communicate. As an industry, we must work to promote these opportunities while also developing strategies to protect young people and encourage them to use mobile devices and the internet safely and responsibly.
By collaborating with stakeholders from across the mobile ecosystem, as well as NGOs and government organisations, the GSMA mPowerYouth programme is dedicated to helping young people make the most of their mobile experience. Working together we can ensure mobile has the power to be a force for good for the next mobile generation.
INITIATIVES
In an increasingly connected world, mobile operators play a key role in contributing to positive outcomes for children in terms of their rights, development and well-being, while minimising any risks and adverse impacts that mobile services can pose for children.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), we have collated a series of inspiring stories from mobile operators about their work supporting children’s rights.
PARTNERSHIPS
On 20 November 2014, on the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the GSMA signed a memorandum of understanding with Child Helpline International (CHI) to work together to protect young people and promote their right to be heard.
The aim of our partnership is to help support relationships between national mobile operators and their in-country child helplines, as well as to foster collaboration on issues of mutual concern, such as safer internet.
The GSMA signed a memorandum of understanding with UNICEF to promote children’s rights in the mobile sector, as well as to join forces in bringing together stakeholders at national, regional and international levels to develop collaborative approaches to child online protection.
In partnership with UNICEF, our mobile operator members, and a range of other organisations including the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC), INHOPE and INTERPOL, the GSMA holds national multi-stakeholder workshops to facilitate a collaborative approach to children’s safe and responsible use of the internet.
