What is the Index?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the transformative socio-economic impacts of digital technologies have been firmly established, there remains a persistent digital divide in Africa, where around two-thirds of the population does not currently use mobile internet. Based on recent connectivity trends, it will take another 30 years for the usage gap to close in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, the GSMA has updated its Digital Africa Index. This consists of four composite indices: the Digital Nations and Society Index (\u2018DNSI\u2019); the Digital Policy and Regulatory Index (\u2018DPRI\u2019); the Mobile Connectivity Index (MCI), and; the Mobile Money Regulatory Index (MMRI). These indices serve complementary but distinct purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DNSI provides a comprehensive assessment of digital mobile adoption and use by consumers, businesses and government. The MCI measures the performance of countries against the key enablers of mobile internet adoption and assesses why people and businesses are unable or unwilling to adopt mobile broadband technologies. The DPRI provides an evidence-based assessment of the policy levers that Governments can pull in order to accelerate their digital objectives, and the MMRI provides an assessment of policy levers that Governments can pull to accelerate financial inclusion. By using the four indices together, policymakers, operators and other stakeholders in every African country can identify which areas of digital adoption and usage are lagging, and what the policy bottlenecks are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performance on each index is scored within a range of 0 to 100 across a number of indicators, with a higher score representing stronger performance. This web tool allows you to explore the data used in each index, and to compare markets across a range of metrics. You can also access the accompanying Digital Africa Index report, the methodology document and download the Index data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note that for the Mobile Connectivity Index, the data for 2024 and 2025 reflects the latest two years of data. On the MCI website<\/a>, this will appear as data for 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
