The sector\u2019s overall economic contribution to EU GDP is now forecast to&nbsp;surpass&nbsp;\u20ac1.6 trillion by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Vivek_Ireland_11062026_1200x628-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Vivek_Ireland_11062026_1200x628-1-1024x536.png\" alt=\"Four people in business attire stand on a stage, posing and smiling for a photo. Data sourced from GSMA Intelligence.\" class=\"wp-image-15941\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ME-Europe-Ireland-2.png 850w, https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ME-Europe-Ireland-2-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ME-Europe-Ireland-2-768x380.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: GSMA Intelligence,&nbsp;<em>Mobile Economy Europe 2026&nbsp;<\/em>report<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings reinforce the mobile sector\u2019s central and direct importance in driving Europe\u2019s growth and success and comes against the backdrop of ongoing legislative reform for the industry that will be stewarded through a critical passage by Ireland\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA,&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<\/strong><em>\u201cThe mobile industry\u2019s&nbsp;central importance&nbsp;to Europe\u2019s economy and jobs market is both clear and increasing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe fact that \u20ac1 in every \u20ac16 that is generated across the EU is the result of the mobile sector reflects how essential our connectivity infrastructure is, not only in accessing the broader digital ecosystem, but as an economic catalyst for European growth.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An employment driver<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underpinning this economic growth was the number of jobs the mobile sector supports, numbering 2.4 million&nbsp;people across the EU&nbsp;at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, 1.3 million are directly employed by the mobile ecosystem, while 1.1 million jobs in other sectors are also the product of the industry\u2019s economic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland\u2019s own mobile ecosystem is robust, with 24,000 people employed by the sector and more than 10.5 million mobile connections across the country, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibec.ie\/connect-and-learn\/insights\/insights\/2025\/09\/26\/telecommunications-industry-telecoms-contribution-to-ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the latest ComReg and Ibec data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicola Cooke, Director of&nbsp;Ibec\u2019s&nbsp;Telecommunications Industry Ireland&nbsp;(TII)<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>association<\/strong>, said that digital connectivity is the backbone of Ireland\u2019s economy and wider&nbsp;society:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>One million people can now work from home&nbsp;here&nbsp;due to&nbsp;major private and public&nbsp;investment in our mobile and broadband infrastructure. There has been a 460% increase in data traffic on the&nbsp;Irish&nbsp;networks over the last eight years, with&nbsp;\u20ac5bn invested by TII members&nbsp;during&nbsp;the same period<\/em>.&nbsp;<em>Remote working, e-learning&nbsp;and telemedicine are among the&nbsp;significant&nbsp;benefits&nbsp;of this<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mobile industry also continued to make a substantial contribution to the funding of the EU\u2019s public sector, with \u20ac110 billion raised through taxes on the mobile ecosystem in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Europe lagging behind&nbsp;as investment gap widens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Against this backdrop, however, Europe\u2019s quality of network service&nbsp;remains&nbsp;behind global leaders.&nbsp;Although&nbsp;5G should become the dominant technology at some point this year, it still only&nbsp;represented&nbsp;43% of mobile connections at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While significant investment has been and continues to be made by operators across the EU \u2013 more than \u20ac140 billion&nbsp;has gone into mobile networks since 2021.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/europe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Mobile-Investment-Needs-in-Europe-GSMA.pdf\">Recent GSMA Intelligence analysis<\/a> projects that \u20ac475 billion more is needed by 2035, of which only \u20ac270 billion is forecast to be accessible, leaving a \u20ac205 billion shortfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This investment gap reflects capex per user in Europe sitting at \u20ac35, half the \u20ac70 per user operators in leading connectivity markets have been able to invest in rolling out widespread 5G standalone&nbsp;networks. This is indicative of the unattractive investment conditions across Europe, the result of long-term overregulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the regulatory&nbsp;proposals&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;coming months&nbsp;are the Digital Networks Act and the Review of the Merger Guidelines. Both&nbsp;represent&nbsp;critical&nbsp;opportunities to improve the investment landscape in Europe, by&nbsp;modernising the&nbsp;EU&nbsp;regulatory framework, and by creating more dynamic conditions to achieve scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Badrinath added:&nbsp;\u201c<em>Policy decisions made over the six months of the Irish EU presidency and into 2027 will ultimately determine how well we bolster the foundational role mobile technologies play in modern society and how well-equipped Europe\u2019s digital ecosystem is to grow and compete with leading global markets<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A strong Irish&nbsp;industry<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile connectivity also enables 25% of the Irish workforce to&nbsp;work remotely, significantly boosting productivity in more sparsely populated regions, while&nbsp;ecommerce, which&nbsp;largely depends&nbsp;on&nbsp;mobile networks, accounts for 21% of Irish SME turnover \u2013 an EU high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cooke added: \u201c<em>We are at&nbsp;an important cross-roads&nbsp;for the industry, facing&nbsp;multiple challenges with the DNA and Cybersecurity Act (CSA) 2.
