{"id":314,"date":"2012-02-13T21:57:39","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T21:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gsmassociation.co.uk\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/?p=314"},"modified":"2025-11-12T14:51:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T14:51:30","slug":"children-in-a-mobile-world-international-research-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/children-in-a-mobile-world-international-research-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Children in a mobile world: International Research Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>To gain a better understanding of how children and young people \u00a0use their mobile phones across the world, the GSMA is collaborating on a multi-year research project with the Mobile Society Research Institute (MSRI), the research subsidiary of NTT DoCoMo.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Children\u2019s use of mobile phones \u2014 An international comparison 2011 report provides a detailed picture of mobile phone use by children from the age of eight to 18, following research conducted with more than 3,500 pairs of children and parents in Japan, India, Paraguay and Egypt.By investigating children\u2019s use of mobile phones simultaneously in different countries, the research aims to provide the societal effects of mobile phone use by children, and to discover the similarities and differences between markets which are at various stages of development and geographically widespread.The report is sponsored by mobile operators in each country and has already covered more than 15,500 pairs of children and their parents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/International-Research-Project-img1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"123\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>ResearchFocus<\/h3>\n<p>To enable year-on-year comparisons, standard questions were posed to children and their parents, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age of first mobile ownership<\/li>\n<li>Parents\u2019 concerns over their children\u2019s use of mobile phones.<\/li>\n<li>Reasons for getting a mobile phone<\/li>\n<li>How they feel about their mobile phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional topics for the 2011 survey included social networking, privacy, services and mobile application use, smartphone and tablet usage<\/p>\n<h3>KeyFindings<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/International-Research-Project-img2.jpg\" width=\"589\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Children around the globe are increasingly confident and passionate users of mobile technology. They are embracing the opportunities provided by mobile phones in way that could not have been predicted a decade ago and beyond that of their parents.This is reflected in some of the research results more prominent and important for Latin America:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>69% of all children surveyed use a mobile phone<\/li>\n<li>40% of children access the internet from mobile phones.<\/li>\n<li>Children who use the mobile internet have high social networking use at 73%<\/li>\n<li>80% of children with mobile phones have a new device.<\/li>\n<li>70% of children in Paraguay use the mobile internet for more than 30 minutes a day.<\/li>\n<li>55% of children aged 15 send six or more text messages a day.<\/li>\n<li>51% of children use the camera, 44% the music player and 26% the video player on a mobile phone.<\/li>\n<li>41% of children in Paraguay use their smartphones as their primary device to access the Internet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>74% of parents are concerned about the privacy of their children in relation to mobile phones.<br \/>\nThere is no definitive correlation between age or income level and ownership and usage of smartphones showing that it is a phenomenon that has no social barriers.<\/p>\n<h3>Resources<\/h3>\n<p>Children\u00b4s Use of Mobile Phones- An international comparison 2011, Executive Summary- English- Paraguay, Japan, India and Egypt (PDF, 325 KB, 4p)<\/p>\n<p>Infographic: Children\u00b4s Use of Mobile Phones 2011- English<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/public-policy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Childrensuseofmobilephones2011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children\u00b4s use of Mobile Phones- An international comparison 2011- full report- English- Paraguay, Japan, India and Egypt<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Future Research<\/h3>\n<p>The GSMA and MSRI are now planning to commence Phase 4 of the project, which will run from February 2012 to November 2012.
