{"id":35736,"date":"2019-09-16T15:00:10","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T14:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/?p=35736"},"modified":"2025-04-25T08:29:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T07:29:36","slug":"worlds-leading-mobile-operators-to-disclose-climate-impacts-as-part-of-new-gsma-led-climate-action-roadmap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/about-us\/regions\/latin-america-and-the-caribbean\/worlds-leading-mobile-operators-to-disclose-climate-impacts-as-part-of-new-gsma-led-climate-action-roadmap\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s leading mobile operators to disclose climate impacts as part of new GSMA-led climate action roadmap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>GSMA-Led Climate Initiative to Develop Decarbonisation Pathway for Mobile Sector<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>16 September 2019, London<\/strong>: Many of the world\u2019s largest mobile operator groups have agreed to start disclosing their solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ impacts as part of a major new GSMA-led initiative to develop a mobile industry solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ action roadmap in line with the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 50 mobile operators \u2013 which together account for more than two thirds of mobile connections globally<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a> \u2013 are now disclosing their solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ impacts, energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions via the internationally recognised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CDP global disclosure system<\/a>. The move will enable full transparency for investors and customers involved in the mobile sector. Many of the companies are disclosing for the first time as part of the GSMA-led initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GSMA operator members that are disclosing via CDP include Am\u00e9rica M\u00f3vil, AT&amp;T Inc., Axiata Group, Bell Canada, Bharti Airtel, BT Group, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, DNA Plc, Elisa Corporation, Far EasTone, Globe Telecom, Inmarsat, KDDI Corporation, KPN, KT Corporation, LG Uplus, Magyar Telekom, Millicom International, MTN Group, MTS, NTT DOCOMO, Oi M\u00f3vel, Orange Group, Proximus, Reliance Jio, Rogers Communications, Singtel, SK Telecom, SoftBank Corp., Spark New Zealand, Sprint Corporation, StarHub, STC, Sunrise, Swisscom, T-Mobile USA, Taiwan Mobile, Tele2 AB, Telecom Italia, Telef\u00f3nica, Telekom Austria, Telenor Group, Telia Company, Telkom SA, Telstra Corporation, TELUS Communications, TIM Brasil, True Corp., Turkcell, Verizon, Vodacom Group, Vodafone Group and Zain Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disclosures form the first phase of an industry-wide, solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ action roadmap. The next step will see the development of a decarbonisation pathway for the mobile industry, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to be in place by February 2020. This will include the development of an industry-wide plan to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s announcement marks the start of a collaborative action by the mobile industry to tackle the solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ emergency, demonstrating how the private sector can show leadership and responsibility in addressing one of the gravest challenges facing our planet,\u201d said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. \u201cThe mobile industry will form the backbone of the future economy and therefore has a unique opportunity to drive change across multiple sectors and in collaboration with our suppliers, investors and customers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe welcome this move by the mobile sector to disclose its solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ impacts via CDP, which demonstrates a clear step-up in commitment to providing transparency to its investors and customers as part of an industry-wide approach,\u201d said Paul Simpson, CEO of CDP. \u201cAs a result of these disclosures, mobile operators will be able to measure and understand their environmental impact, helping them to build sustainability into the heart of their businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Setting the mobile industry\u2019s science-based targets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SBTi provides a transparent and effective framework for meeting the more ambitious Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0c by 2050, which would substantially reduce the risks and effects of solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ change. However, there has been no methodology designed specifically for the mobile sector to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new pathway under development will provide parameters to accelerate the rate at which mobile operators set their own targets. However, the timescale at which individual companies reach the target will depend on a number of factors, including their geographic location and their ability to access renewable energy. The GSMA expects that some companies will meet the net-zero target significantly ahead of the 2050 deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mobilising the industry on solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GSMA is working with participating operators and will be partnering with the international community, solutions-and-impact\/connectivity-for-good\/external-affairs\/climate-action\/ experts and third-party organisations to advance industry progress, establish best practices, and support disclosure and target setting. The industry is also committed to advancing mobile technology innovations in areas such as big data and IoT that can enable energy efficient and environmental solutions across multiple sectors, including transport, manufacturing, agriculture, building, energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new initiative will be a major focus of the mobile industry\u2019s presence at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) next week and at the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mwclosangeles.com\/session\/latin-america-intelligent-connectivity-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MWC19 Los Angeles<\/a> event being held in Los Angeles next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work forms part of the industry\u2019s journey to support the delivery of the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG #13 on Climate Action.
