Through GSMA\u2019s global initiative, Claro, Entel, and Telef\u00f3nica are opening their networks to enable developers worldwide to create new applications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 19, 2024, Santiago, Chile: <\/strong>Consolidating its leadership role in the digital landscape of Latin America, Chile advances with GSMA Open Gateway, the global mobile industry initiative created to simplify the development of applications and services. During the 1st INACAP Technology Summit, operators Claro, Entel, and Telef\u00f3nica unveiled the progress of their API (Application Programming Interfaces) proposal and discussed how these tools will drive new business cases and partnerships in the local ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSMA Open Gateway is a standard through which mobile operators provide developers with a series of network functions used to create applications and services. By bringing together operators from around the world, the initiative facilitates the design of digital products capable of operating seamlessly on all devices, regardless of the country or operator. This is achieved through unique access points, APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which serve as gateways to information about network capabilities. The APIs are available through the CAMARA repository, an open-source project by GSMA and the Linux Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally, the first phase of GSMA Open Gateway has focused on APIs aimed at digital security. In line with this trend, the three APIs developed in Chile are SIM SWAP<\/strong>, which allows for verification of recent SIM card changes; Device Location<\/strong>, which provides accurate information on a device\u2019s location; and Device Status<\/strong>, which reveals whether a device is roaming and in which country. By providing key real-time information, these APIs play a crucial role in detecting and preventing fraud in financial transactions, making banks and fintechs among the first verticals to show interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trist\u00e1n Riquelme, Strategy and Products Manager, Claro Empresas, highlighted: \u201cWorking with GSMA Open Gateway represents a significant step forward in the development and innovation of digital ecosystems, impacting businesses, software developers, and telecommunications companies. This is an effort we\u2019ve driven alongside our parent company, Am\u00e9rica M\u00f3vil, with visible results including six APIs and launches in Brazil and Argentina, among others. We are excited about this project because it marks progress for our corporate clients in sectors such as banking, fintech, public services, transportation, and logistics, who will, for example, gain access to new solutions for fraud prevention and identity authentication<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Open Gateway initiative represents a significant opportunity for the telecommunications industry, enabling operators to open their networks to developers, fostering the creation of innovative applications, and enhancing operational efficiency. Throughout its 60-year history, Entel has been committed to providing comprehensive solutions to its customers that go beyond traditional telecommunications services. This particular initiative aims to transform entire sectors by enabling safer and more efficient access to networks,” <\/em>stated Entel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“GSMA Open Gateway is a global initiative from the telecom sector aimed at transforming communication networks into future-ready platforms. In Chile, we continue to collaborate with other operators on the implementation of Open Gateway, a concept that the Group has been driving since early 2023. We are aligned with the country\u2019s development plan, focusing on launching anti-fraud and online identity services. Our company has been working on our internal transformation for a long time to make Open Gateway a reality, which will allow us to strengthen the solutions that the digital world today demands from the productive sector<\/em>,” said Rodrigo Rivera, Regional Manager of Digital Services, Movistar Empresas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“GSMA Open Gateway is making strong progress in Latin America, with operators in every country in the region, representing over 90% of total users, actively participating in the initiative. With Claro, Entel, and Telef\u00f3nica, Chile is making a notable contribution to this global effort that drives innovation and enables new opportunities for the development of digital services<\/em>,” concluded Alejandro Adamowicz, Director of Technology and Strategy for Latin America, GSMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its launch at MWC Barcelona 2023, more than 66 mobile operator groups representing 278 networks and three quarters of mobile connections globally now participate in the initiative alongside many of the world\u2019s leading technology companies. Brazil and Argentina have already launched their first portfolio of APIs in Latin America, and GSMA is leading the implementation in four other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
