Claro, Entel, and Telefónica join GSMA’s global initiative that enables the development of more secure applications with an enhanced user experience.
22 January 2025, Lima: Peru joins countries around the world driving GSMA Open Gateway, the mobile industry initiative designed to simplify the creation of digital applications and services for developers. At an event hosted by GSMA, operators Claro, Entel, and Telefónica showcased the progress of their first solutions within the initiative. Following the global trend, this initial phase focuses on anti-fraud tools and the protection of users’ digital identity.
GSMA Open Gateway is a standard through which mobile operators provide developers access to a range of network functions used to create applications and services. By bringing together operators from around the world, the initiative facilitates the design of digital products that can function seamlessly across all devices, regardless of country or operator. This is achieved through unique access points, known as APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which serve as gateways to information about network capabilities. These APIs are available through the CAMARA repository, an open-source project by GSMA and the Linux Foundation.
The first four APIs developed in Peru are SIM SWAP, which allows the verification of SIM card replacements on a mobile line; Device Location, which provides information about the location of a device; Device Status, which reveals whether a device is roaming and in which country; and Number Verification, which checks if a phone number is associated with a specific device. By providing real-time key information about devices and mobile lines, these APIs aid in the detection and prevention of fraud in transactions, positioning the financial industry as a primary beneficiary. In addition to representing a new business opportunity in the B2B (business-to-business) segment for operators, GSMA Open Gateway helps create a more secure mobile environment for end users.
“In Claro Peru, we believe that collaborative work is essential to solve the various challenges in the telecommunications sector while seeking solutions for people. This is exactly what GSMA Open Gateway is about: providing various benefits to users to combat issues like online fraud through the development of applications that are tailored to market needs and based on previous experiences from Peru and around the world, all aimed at finding effective solutions. Our commitment is to continue down this path, for the benefit of all users,” stated Mariano Orihuela, Corporate Market Director, Claro Perú.
“In Entel, we work to promote a digital ecosystem that fosters innovation and enhances connectivity for everyone. Initiatives like GSMA Open Gateway are an example of the impact that can be achieved when we work together to develop solutions that benefit more Peruvians. Today, our commitment to bringing the endless possibilities that technology offers to improve people’s lives is strengthened, and without a doubt, we will continue supporting initiatives that ensure a safe and high-quality digital experience for all our customers,” said Jorge Enrique Linares, Wholesale Business Manager, Entel Perú.
“GSMA Open Gateway is a global initiative in the telecom sector led by the GSMA, which aims to transform communication networks into future-ready platforms. In Peru, we continue to collaborate with other operators in the implementation of GSMA Open Gateway, a concept that Telefónica has been promoting since early 2023. We are aligned with the country’s development plan, initially focusing on launching anti-fraud and online identity services,” added Sergio Vera, Marketing and B2B Product Manager, Telefónica del Perú.
“GSMA Open Gateway is progressing strongly in Latin America, with at least one operator from each country already integrated into the initiative, reaching over 90% of mobile users in the region,” highlighted Alejandro Adamowicz, Director of Technology and Strategy for Latin America, GSMA. “With today’s announcement, the mobile industry in Peru is paving the way for new collaboration opportunities in the digital ecosystem and reaffirming its commitment to applying innovation to contribute to mobile user security,” he concluded.
Since its launch at MWC Barcelona 2023, over 69 mobile operator groups, representing 280 networks and more than 75% of global access, have already joined GSMA Open Gateway, alongside the world’s leading tech companies. In Latin America, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile have already presented their first portfolio of APIs, with more markets to join in 2025.
