The GSMA’s Brian Muthiora participated at a public sector/private sector dialogue session on cross border mobile money in Nairobi in September, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Kenya. Financial sector regulators from 16 countries, with varying degrees of mobile money adoption, came together and explored how cross-border mobile money services can contribute to financial inclusion and how they should be regulated in practice.
We shared insights on the benefits of mobile enabled cross border remittances, emerging models and regulatory challenges faced. There was consensus that broader dialogue was necessary bringing together operators, regulators, the development finance community and the remittance hubs at the centre of the emerging remittance models, to help raise awareness on the benefits of mobile enabled cross border remittances and to lower the regulatory barriers.
