Following the launch of commercial 5G networks in 2019/2020 by pioneering countries, commercial deployments have gained momentum with more countries around the world jumping on the commercial 5G bandwagon in the last 24 months.  As at the end of Q2 2022, 195 operators in 75 markets had launched commercial 5G networks and 79 operators had launched FWA 5G.  5G SA commercialisation is also gaining speed with 27 operators globally offering commercial 5G services on SA networks in the same period with the APAC region accounting for nearly half of these launches.  By the end of this year, an additional 15 operators are expected to have launched or transitioned to SA networks.  Without question, 5G is now mainstream and it is playing a key role in driving and accelerating digital transformation across sectors and society.

Japan successfully launched commercial 5G services with NTT DOCOMO, KDDI and Softbank deploying commercial 5G networks in March 2020 as one of leading 5G pioneering countries.  Since then, Japan’s fourth MNO Rakuten Mobile has joined this group by offering commercial 5G services based on its unique approach to network deployment.  5G now, along with other tech and policy enablers, is playing an important role in enabling and accelerating the digital transformation of consumer and enterprise sectors across verticals and the wider economy in Japan.

The GSMA with the support of MIC Japan is holding the Digital Transformation Leaders’ CxO Summit in Tokyo Japan on 29th and 30th of November 2022.  Working together to advance the mobile industry, the GSMA Digital Transformation Acceleration Forum (DXAF) invites DX and 5G industry/ecosystem leaders for a focused discussion on the policy, industry and commercial opportunities and challenges to driving sector wide digital transformation beyond 5G towards 6G. This event is by-invitation only.
