ASEAN markets, with large regional populations, comprise a significant mobile economy footprint in APAC. Mobile operators and governments in these markets are actively engaging in planning for 5G and are also contributing to the regional deliberations prior to the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19), to be held in Egypt in October. WRC-19 will decide on global allocations for spectrum useful for 5G in the millilitre-wave spectrum.

The GSMA APAC Spectrum team delivered interventions at the 5th Asia Pacific Spectrum Management Conference, held in Kuala Lumpur on 12-14 March 2019. Some of the topics discussed included 5G roadmap planning and WRC-19 regional preparations – at a well-attended event with over 300 participants from governments and industry. The team also attended the first 5G ASEAN Conference, held in Hanoi on 21-22 March 2019. This event was attended by the ASEAN membership and industry, and the GSMA APAC Spectrum team contributed to the discussions on spectrum at the Ministerial roundtable.  It also delivered the opening keynote on day two at the public session, placing spectrum for 5G in millimetre-wave, its economic benefits and WRC-19 mobile positions at the centre of the session.
