GSMA contributes to the PITA Business and Exposition Forum image

The Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) Business and Exposition Forum was held over three days from 13 to 15 April 2021 as a platform for the mobile ecosystem, policymakers and regulators to exchange knowledge, experiences, and ideas to support digital economic transformation via a sustainable mobile industry. GSMA was invited to speak on a range of topics with a special focus on the COVID-19 impact in the region, such as digital security, policy and regulatory development and opportunities in the new reality to progress towards a digital society.

As part of a panel discussion with industry leaders and policymakers, Julian Gorman, Head of APAC at GSMA outlined the importance of an agile, cooperative, and sustainable response to the global pandemic and how the mobile industry can be better prepared for future calamities.

Jeanette Whyte, Head of Public Policy APAC at GSMA presented the impact of having smart data privacy laws in order to secure consumer trust as an element to power the digital economy. It was promising to see that many Island Nations are considering data privacy laws for the first time.

Finally, Kaung Sitt, Market Engagement Manager for the GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator Programme shared his experience in supporting tech entrepreneurship in the Pacific Islands. Through 2019 and 2020, GSMA has provided training and pitching programmes to support entrepreneurs and start-ups to build a strong partnership between innovators and mobile network operators in the region.
