5G + Edge Computing based Green Electrolytic Aluminum Factory

Yunnan Province of China is an inland province famous for its tourism industry. The local government is eager to develop the economy with the rich aluminum mines while maintaining strict environmental supervision. Traditional aluminum electrolytic enterprises usually mean high energy consumption, adverse pollution, and dangerous working environment.

Since 2019, ZTE has used 5G and related cloud technologies to reconstruct an intelligent green aluminum electrolytic factory. ZTE works with partners to build a smart factory through "1 5G private network +1 industrial internet +N types innovative industrial application." The 5G IoT technology is used to connect 70000 terminal sensors with ultra-high density in harsh environments of the factory. The Automatic online detection from 0℃ to 1000℃ is realized instead of hundreds of human labour which not only improves the product quality but also facilitates occupational health and safety for the workers . The traditional factory with same scale usually requires 8000 workers, which has been reduced to only 25% of that now by enhancing 5G digital transformation.

Through 5G access and MEC-based environment monitoring system, full angle monitoring and pollution detection, early warning are implemented for the park, including dust, sewag, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and noise achieving a green and comfortable, environment-friendly factory area.

A 5G private network connects more than 10000 data sources all over the factory to implement Big Data analysis of equipment and enhance streamline management of energy consumption. At present, each ton of aluminum reduces power consumption by 100 -200 kwh, and saves power consumption by 90 million kwh each year.
