Building on the mobile industry’s commitment to support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with our industry purpose of ‘Intelligently Connecting Everyone and Everything to a Better Future’, the GSMA delivered high level speaking platforms, events and wider activities during the UN General Assembly Week 2019.

GSMA supported platforms during the event are outlined below:

CEO Roundtable: Collective Leadership for Climate Action – 24, September 2019

This high-level, closed-door roundtable brought together CEOs from the mobile ecosystem and adjacent industries to align on strategies and discuss:

  • How to approach the transition towards a carbon zero economy?
  • What challenges to expect along the way and where can collaboration and collective action across sectors help overcome those?
  • What support and incentives are most needed from Governments?
  • How is the investor community responding to ESG disclosure?

Concordia Annual Summit Plenary Session: Reaching Net Zero Emissions: The Tech Sector Leading on Climate Action – 24, September 2019
While reaching net zero emissions will require a wide network of stakeholders taking action, mobile technology is uniquely positioned to not only affect change but lead this effort due to its scale, adaptability, and ever-increasing utility across sectors. Hear how the mobile industry is taking action to get to net zero emissions.

Concordia Summit Strategic Dialogue: Building an Inclusive and Ethical Digital Future – 24, September 2019

Digital technology contributes significantly to our society, delivering live-enhancing services to people of all backgrounds in all corners of the world. While leaving no one behind remains a core priority, without strong leadership from the private sector and cooperation across sectors and regions, there remains the risk of digital technology creating new forms of exclusion. Areas for discussion included:

  • What does (local) empowerment through digital inclusion look like? How do we make this a reality?
  • What are the main ethical challenges in a digital society that strives to leave no one behind?
  • How can companies and government foster digital cooperation across borders?
  • What are the major barriers to digital inclusion? What are the major opportunities for digital inclusion?

United Nations SDG Action Zone – GSMA Hosted Session – 25th September 2019 Leading With Purpose: Transforming Business to Accelerate SDG Impact.
Many business leaders have the SDGs on their agenda, but what does it mean to transform or transition into a purpose-driven company with a triple bottom line approach: people, planet, profit? Business leaders discuss addressing societal challenges, and new ways of doing business.
