The GSMA Connected Living Smart Cities initiative hosted Smart Energy for Smart Cities webinar on Wednesday 28 March 2012 to share and discuss the role of Mobile in transforming the Smart Grid infrastructure.  This 1- hour webinar was highly engaging and well attended, bringing together global utility companies, governments and municipalities, Mobile operators, technology companies and vendors.

  • Smart city and smart grid projects launched by mobile operators in Europe and North America.
  • Why mobile technology was chosen and how mobile operators support smart energy and smart city communication requirements.

Ton Brand

Ton Brand has been working for the GSMA since 2005 as a senior project director and initially was responsible for the GSMA activities related to 3G embedded mobile broadband notebooks as well responsible for the development and launch of the Mobile Broadband Service Mark into the mobile space. He is currently working on the implementation and delivery of a large scale 3-year Connected Living programme –  focussing on stimulating and enabling market growth and creation of innovation, market trials and market awareness.

Geoff Sarney, Head of Smart Metering, Telefónica O2 UK

Geoff is currently Head of Smart Metering at Telefónica O2. He joined to develop an eco-system and end-to-end schema that would provide a common communications architecture to benefit Smart Metering/Grid/City applications. He now helps plan solution development for the global emerging portfolio, and is a principal lobbyist on behalf of Telefónica O2 and its partners. He has more than 10 years of experience in Energy and Telecommunications, in both large global blue chip technology organizations, and service delivery consultancies.

Andy Wood, Director, Business Development, Smart Energy & Home Security and Automation, Qualcomm

Andy Wood

Andy Wood has been working at Qualcomm since 2004, most recently as a Director of Business Development in Qualcomm’s CDMA Technologies semiconductor organization. His group is responsible for identifying new market opportunities that leverage Qualcomm’s core competencies and innovations in the wireless domain including connectivity and application processing solutions in the smart energy and intelligent home space.  Prior to his current position, he served in a product management capacity for the Qualcomm’s Enterprise Services division where he was responsible for the small fleet product segment.

Svetlana Grant, Director of Smart Cities, Connected Living Programme, GSMA

Svetlana Grant

Svetlana Grant, Director of Smart Cities at the GSMA Connected Living programme, has over 10 years of experience in mobile industry analysis and research. She has been part of the GSMA’s Connected Living programme since 2009, leading the development and publication of the first release of the Embedded Mobile Guidelines and focussing on the issues of provisioning large volumes of embedded devices. In the past two years, Svetlana managed the smart utilities work stream and participated in the regulatory and standardisation work for smart grid and smart home. Svetlana currently leads the smart cities work stream, working with mobile operators and vendors on the development of opportunities in urban smart energy and transport.
