During MWC Shanghai, the GSMA held the first edition of the eSIM Workshop. Presentations came from China Unicom, UL and SIM Alliance, as well as the two sponsors; Gotell and Valid, and an introduction from GSMA. It was clear that Greater China has high ambitions for both M2M and Consumer eSIM, with all the speakers highlighting the need to increase the speed of deployments.
The SIM Alliance explained how eSIM resolves security issues within IoT devices, and gave information about their specifications in that area. UL covered the current tests available for eSIM devices and some of the gaps, which could be a threat to either security or interoperability. Valid gave some market predictions and discussed use cases for eSIM. China Unicom described some of the challenges of eSIM, and how they have transformed their business to accelerate eSIM adoption. Gotell shared information on three eSIM trials they have done.
