TIP sets its sights on advancing metaverse-ready networks

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) has formed the Metaverse-Ready Networks Project Group, a working group to deliver solutions and architectures that enhance network readiness to support metaverse experiences. Telefónica, T-Mobile, Sparkle (Telecom Italia), Meta and Microsoft will be the initial co-chairs of this group, which will be tasked with developing industry-wide network capabilities, specific APIs and mechanisms needed to offer end-to-end (E2E) connectivity for immersive applications at scale.

TIP’s metaverse group is part of wider efforts at collaboration and knowledge sharing between stakeholders from business, government and civil society to build a fully fledged metaverse. For operators, the provision of network services, including 5G (and future 6G) connectivity and network innovations such as edge computing and slicing, is a key pathway to carve out a position in the metaverse ecosystem. Operators can also capture value from the development of platforms, content and services inside the metaverse. Finally, partnerships both within the industry and beyond will be crucial for operators to capitalise on the potential of the metaverse, as highlighted in a recent GSMA Intelligence report.
