Network 2020 highlights from Mobile World Congress 2016

Visitors to the mobile industry’s premier event surpassed the 100,000 mark for the first time in the event’s history.

RCS: The Path to One Billion Users

We started the week with an announcement and a seminar supporting RCS adoption:

Global operators, Google and the GSMA align behind adoption of rich communication services.

The seminar was an industry panel on the future of mobile messaging. Our speakers talked about how the mobile industry is working together to support Rich Communications Services (RCS) with the goal of accelerating their deployment and growing the RCS ecosystem.

Unlocking Commercial Opportunities from 4G Evolution

Our second seminar looked at which technology driver would be the winning platform to unlock commercial opportunities for 4G evolution to 5G.

We were joined by Sadayuki Abeta, Director, Radio Access Network Development Department, NTT DoCoMo; Mansoor Hanif, Director of Radio Access Networks, EE; Yoichi Kanda, Director for Global ICT Strategy, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Japan; Zarrar Khan, Chief Technology Officer, VIVA – Kuwait Telecom Company and Phil Laidler, Partner and Consulting Director, STL Partners.

Following a panel of presentations and debate, Carrier Aggregation was chosen as the technology with the most potential.

We demonstrated the latest developments in Advanced Communications with the support of our partners:

Demonstration montage v2

Summit-Tech
Explored the Advanced Communications experience customers can enjoy via a virtual reality demonstration. Featuring enriched communications users were able to interact with callers in three different cities using the latest in video calling and messaging services.

Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom
The features of enriched calling were demonstrated, showcasing the seamless experience consumers enjoy across the Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom interconnected networks in
Germany. The demonstration also looked at open market devices from HTC & LG running on the Android operating system with enriched calling services natively installed.

Nokia and Huawei
Technical demonstration which showed VoLTE (Voice over LTE) interoperability and IP interconnection based on the experience of a working system in China.

EE, Nokia and KT
A live TV feed of Mobile Live TV over an LTE network using MEC (Mobile Edge Computing). Featuring eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services).

The demonstration included a bodymounted security camera which could provide a live feed to a control room showing instantly what is happening and where – a major benefit to those customers seeking the very latest in incident management services.
