Telefónica, KT Corporation and China Unicom have been collaborating during 2020 in building and demonstrating differential edge capabilities. They recently announced the successful verification of its 5G Multi-access edge computing (MEC) technology for global roaming infrastructure and federation among different edge platform. This will lay groundwork for enterprises and private developers to be able to make inroads into domestic and global markets with a single service development that satisfies common standards.

MEC roaming mechanism allows mobile users visiting abroad to leverage nearby MEC infrastructure for optimal MEC experience beyond their home networks. Without this mechanism, mobile users abroad will have to resort to MEC infrastructure located back in home country, significantly undermining the low-latency feature at the expense of user experience. This scenario has been successfully tested between KT and Telefonica. The platforms used have been based on Altran technology and China Unicom in house technology.

Faisal Zia is responsible for Network Economics, part of Future Networks programme at the GSMA which is assessing innovation delivering CapEx and OpEx savings in the lead up to the 5G era with a particular focus on energy efficiency, backhaul optimisation and new applications in infrastructure sharing.

Alex has a MSc in Telecommunication from Aston University (UK), after having performed different functions associated to Core network in O2 UK, Alex is now based in Madrid and is head of network platforms for the Telefonica group. As part of his role Alex is responsible of key programs such as the introduction of the 5G SA architecture and the definition and deployment of the Telco Edge concept.

Taekhee received M.S. degree in Distributed and Cloud Computing from Sogang University. She is now based in Seoul and is a research engineer of Technology Strategy for KT R&D Institute. She’s played a key role in developing SDN Orchestrator and CI/CD  architecture with OPNFV in KT. Taekhee has designed and managed KT 5G OpenLab. She is currently engaged in AI platform strategy for KT.
