Distributed Antenna System (DAS) leased as a neutral infrastructure
The mobile operators are faced with the challenge of densifying their networks while optimising their network costs in the 5G era. Whilst there are many approaches to resolving this challenge, an approach is for operators to share the deployment and operations of the network infrastructure. In the era of network densification, operators are considering a concept that is more radical where one network infrastructure is owned by a non-operator 3rd party – possibly associated with the operator(s) (e.g., a joint venture formed by two or more operators) –. This infrastructure is consequently leased to multiple operators.
In this context, it is important for mobile operator to be relieved of operational activities that lie outside of its core business and of the financial risk that is involved with deploying mobile network infrastructure. This is why key operators have adopted Cellnex’s DAS as a Service (DASaaS) solution, including Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange. Based in Spain and established in 2008, Cellnex provides radio access network infrastructure solution that can be leased to mobile operators.

A distributed antenna system (DAS) is a network of spatially separate antenna nodes connected to a common source via a transport system that provides wireless services within a geographical area or a building. DAS can be installed in buildings to boost wireless signals inside them. They are often located within large facilities such as stadiums or company premises. Cellnex uses DAS systems and provides DASaaS using an end-to-end approach.
Cellnex plans to improve coverage and repeater capacity of the mobile radio signal in specific areas serving mobile operators, both with structures dedicated to a single operator and in multi-standard/multi-frequency and multi-operator “neutral host” mode, since a single antenna can distribute the signal for several frequencies and several operators simultaneously.
