Operator requirement on the 5G status indicator on UE display was already studied in the 5G Introduction taskforce. However, the taskforce stopped after identifying the requirements and did not proceed to further technical analysis. The issues to be studied for the operators are:
– How should upperLayerIndication be interpreted as? “The UE has entered a coverage area that offers 5G capabilities”
– Should upperLayerIndication be extended to 3 bits or should it be retained as 1 bit? No consensus for extension
– Is default configuration desirable for Open Market Devices? YES. It should be the configuration communicated to 3GPP
– Is there a need for mechanism to override legacy configuration with current operator’s configuration? NO
