At the same time, advances in 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), automation and digital infrastructure are creating new opportunities to rethink how healthcare is delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Realising this potential, however, requires more than technology. It demands collaboration across healthcare providers, mobile operators, technology companies and policymakers to move beyond isolated innovation projects towards scalable, system-wide transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was the focus of the&nbsp;<strong>GSMA Connected Healthcare Executive Roundtable<\/strong>, held during MWC Shanghai on 25 June 2026. Bringing together healthcare leaders, telecommunications experts, technology providers and international organisations, the discussion explored how advanced connectivity can accelerate the next generation of connected healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundtable forms part of GSMA&#8217;s broader Connected Healthcare programme, which brings together industry leaders to develop practical implementation models, encourage cross-sector collaboration and help scale connected healthcare solutions globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building the Foundations for Connected Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening the session,&nbsp;<strong>Paresh Modi<\/strong>, Senior Director, Healthcare Partnerships at GSMA Foundry, highlighted the growing role of advanced connectivity in enabling more intelligent, integrated healthcare systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He welcomed perspectives from&nbsp;our esteemed keynote speakers,&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Gao Yujia<\/strong>&nbsp;of the National University Health System (Singapore),&nbsp;<strong>Mr Christopher Fabian<\/strong>&nbsp;from UNICEF and&nbsp;<strong>Mr Fenglei Yang from China Unicom<\/strong>. Together, they represented the breadth of expertise needed to address healthcare&#8217;s increasingly complex digital transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paresh outlined the objective of the discussion: to examine how connectivity can help solve real healthcare challenges by bringing together expertise from across healthcare, telecommunications and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also introduced GSMA Foundry&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Connected Health and Community Care Accelerator (CHACCA)<\/strong>, a collaboration between GSMA Foundry, NUHS of Singapore and Global Health Connector, which is designed to accelerate the deployment of connected healthcare solutions through collaboration between healthcare providers, operators, technology partners and policymakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHACCA is where the ecosystem comes together to share best practice and to drive collaboration in order to deliver real-world connected healthcare deployments. It utilises the latest innovations in advanced cellular connectivity and AI solutions, delivering beneficial outcomes to patients globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Held under non-commercial principles, the roundtable encouraged open discussion focused on shared learning, implementation experience and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Innovation to Implementation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the roundtable, few interested delegates visited the Medical Simulation Lab at Zhongshan Hospital, offering a practical demonstration of how advanced connectivity is already transforming clinical environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit showcased smart wards, digital operating theatres, simulated outpatient clinics and telemedicine facilities, alongside demonstrations of AI-assisted diagnosis, XR-enabled clinical training and intelligent clinical workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than presenting future concepts, the tour demonstrated how hospitals are integrating connectivity, AI and immersive technologies across the patient journey, from pre-hospital care through treatment and ongoing community care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The experience provided valuable context for the discussions that followed, reinforcing that connected healthcare is already moving from pilot projects to real-world deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Scaling Connected Healthcare: Lessons from Singapore<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr. Gao Yujia,&nbsp;<\/strong>Consultant liver transplant surgeon and Deputy CTO<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>of National University Health System led the keynotes as he shared how the embedding AI, automation and advanced connectivity into everyday healthcare delivery is providing positive outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples included AI-powered medical imaging, predictive early warning systems, robotics, wearable technologies, telemedicine and mixed reality applications supporting both clinical practice and medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key enabler has been the deployment of a secure 5G-enabled virtual private network, providing the low-latency, resilient connectivity required for applications such as XR-assisted surgery, remote collaboration and real-time clinical data exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Gao also demonstrated how connectivity enables expertise to reach beyond hospital walls, including remote surgical supervision between Singapore and Ghana and AI-enabled diagnostics supporting underserved communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the presentation, one message remained consistent: connected healthcare should not be limited to advanced economies. Making AI and digital health accessible across low- and middle-income countries will be essential to improving healthcare outcomes globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Connectivity as Critical Healthcare Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providing a global public health perspective,&nbsp;<strong>Mr<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Christopher Fabian, <\/strong>Lead Digital Inclusion, UNICEF one of healthcare&#8217;s biggest challenges: digital inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions of people remain unable to access connected healthcare services because healthcare facilities still lack reliable internet connectivity. In many countries, governments also have limited visibility of the digital infrastructure supporting schools and healthcare facilities, making strategic investment more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNICEF is helping address this challenge through large-scale digital mapping programmes that provide governments with real-time insight into national connectivity coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion reinforced an important shift in thinking. Reliable digital connectivity is becoming as fundamental to healthcare delivery as roads, electricity or hospital buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without it, healthcare providers cannot fully benefit from digital diagnostics, specialist expertise, remote care or AI-enabled services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants also discussed the policy, procurement and financing models needed to create sustainable digital health ecosystems capable of scaling nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Building the Smart Hospital Ecosystem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation then turned to how AI, data and advanced connectivity are reshaping the modern hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mr Fenglei Yang<\/strong>, Chief Data Officer for Healthcare at China Unicom shared how AI is increasingly being integrated into clinical workflows to improve both patient care and operational efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples included AI-assisted patient data collection, ambient clinical documentation and automated integration into electronic medical records, helping reduce administrative burden while providing clinicians with faster access to actionable information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants agreed that achieving these benefits at scale requires healthcare organisations to move beyond isolated digital solutions towards integrated platform-based architectures that combine connectivity, data and intelligence across the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interoperability, data quality and secure real-time information sharing remain significant barriers. Many healthcare providers continue to operate disconnected systems that limit the deployment of AI across clinical environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion also highlighted the critical role of connectivity infrastructure itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many medical IoT devices continue to rely on Wi-Fi, participants discussed the opportunity to increase adoption of standards-based 5G connectivity, providing more secure, resilient and interoperable networks capable of supporting applications such as remote patient monitoring, hospital-at-home services and connected medical devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Moving Beyond Pilot Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final discussion focused on one of the biggest challenges facing healthcare innovation: scaling successful projects beyond individual deployments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contributions came from representatives from variety of participants including China Mobile, Zhonghan Hospital, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai general hospital, Huashan Hospital , Global Health Connector and others from the connected healthcare ecosystem. The conversation explored the conditions needed to deliver connected healthcare at scale. Participants agreed that successful solutions must be co-designed from the outset, bringing together healthcare providers, operators, technology companies and end users to ensure they address genuine clinical and operational needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equally important is shared responsibility across the ecosystem. Healthcare providers, connectivity partners, policymakers, technology vendors and procurement teams all have a role in enabling sustainable digital transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While AI offers significant opportunities to improve efficiency and support clinical decision-making, participants agreed that human oversight will remain essential to ensure trust, accountability and patient safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, successful implementation depends not only on technology, but also on collaboration, governance and repeatable deployment models that can be adopted across healthcare systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Accelerating the Next Phase of Connected Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussions in Shanghai reflected a sector moving beyond experimentation towards implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across every session, participants agreed that the technologies needed to transform healthcare already exist. The challenge now is building the partnerships, governance frameworks and implementation models required to deploy them at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roundtable also reinforced the value of regional collaboration, strengthening connections between China, ASEAN and the wider international healthcare community to accelerate knowledge sharing and support wider adoption of proven connected healthcare models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GSMA will continue this work through its Connected Healthcare programme, including the upcoming Connected Healthcare Roundtable and Summit at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.m360series.com\/asean\">M360 ASEAN<\/a>&nbsp;in Kuala Lumpur, bringing together healthcare and connectivity leaders to share implementation experience, foster collaboration and accelerate deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare transformation is no longer defined solely by technological innovation.
