A Method for Network Element Discovery in 4G/5G Converged Networks

Background

Based on factors such as the current status of communication networks and future network development trends, 4G/5G converged core network is the key to ensure seamless customer experiences during the transition stage of 5G network.

The convergence of 4G and 5G networks is an inevitable trend that will lead to an increase in the number of network elements (NEs) and greater complexity in network deployment. Based on 4G core network (EPC) architecture, to achieve control and user plan separation (CUPS), the concept of Network Functions (NFs) with a finer granularity of network element functionalities is introduced in 5G Core Network (5GC). Some of the NFs in the control plane of 5GC include AMF, SMF, AF, NSSF, NEF, NRF, PCF, AUSF and UDM.

Difficulties

In 4G/5G converged core network, the number of NEs increase, while NRF only stores and manages NFs in 5GC, without a unified management of NFs in both 5GC and EPC. This situation leads to an increase workload in the management associated with multiple NEs, thus discovering and selecting these NEs become a challenge.

Method

To overcome these issues, IPLOOK has proposed a method for network element discovery in 4G/5G converged core network, along with an NRF device designed specifically for 4G/5G network convergence. Click here to know more detail.

IPLOOK’s method and device enables the efficient management of multiple network elements in 4G/5G converged core network, thereby enhancing customer experiences and ensuring smooth upgrade to 5G network deployment.
