EIF-GSMA High-Level Roundtable Discussion on “Modernizing Europe’s digital rules”

Start: Sunday 26 February 2017

End: Sunday 26 February 2017

Location: Barcelona, Spain

The GSMA, together with the European Internet Forum (EIF), will organise a Roundtable discussion focusing on modernising Europe’s digital regulatory framework at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2017.

The world is preparing itself for the next business cycle in the mobile economy, especially concerning exciting developments such as 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). Policy makers, operators and vendors are teaming up and exploring possibilities on how to launch the new technologies in the best way.

A big part of the success of this further digitisation of the economy and society lies in the regulatory approach. In Europe, the European Commission has laid the legislative groundwork for the Digital Single Market and set out clear goals to reach a ‘Gigabit Society’ by 2025. The very core of modernising the regulatory framework, is the European Electronic Communications Code which was officially published in September 2016.

With the right policy and regulatory framework, Europe could, once again, be at the forefront of technological innovation worldwide. What stumbling blocks can we expect before the Code gets adopted by the European Parliament and the Member States? Do telecom operators need to step up the cooperation with vertical industries such as the car and health sector, in order for a smooth introduction of 5G? How will the Code impact regulatory modernisation of the telecoms sector across the world?

This session will explore these principles and more as we look at modernizing Europe’s digital rules.
