Innovation for Connected Living: Mobile Enabled Smart Cities

Start: Thursday 21 June 2012

End: Thursday 21 June 2012

Venue: Unnamed Venue

More than 50 people attended the Innovation for Connected Living: Mobile Enabled Smart Cities event in Shanghai, hosted by the GSMA as part of MAE on 21 June. This seminar explored the market potential behind Connected Living and the Internet of Everything, and showcased innovative smart city projects and services.

Speakers from Everything Everywhere, Telstra and Qualcomm discussed the mobile opportunity emerging in the m2m sector thanks to the falling prices for devices and mobile data, and availability of advanced network technologies. This new opportunity is more than just connecting things; mobile technologies are increasingly used to monitor and provide response for a variety of devices, as well as analyse the data.  Whilst previous m2m projects delivered large scale, value and margins, the explosion of connected devices means that operators need to respond with new opportunities at lower volume and more price sensitive.

Educate future customers is crucial

The panel agreed that in order to take advantage of the m2m “long tail” opportunity, the mobile industry needs to proactively inform and educate its future customers about the advantages of the connected life.

Speakers from KT, Cisco, Mobile World Capital Barcelona and GSMA presented examples of existing smart city initiatives, and spoke about the future of urban services. KT, a leading mobile operator in the smart city space, presented its portfolio of smart city projects in South Korea and internationally, and shared the experience of running public private partnerships for successful delivery of smart city projects.

Cisco introduced the audience to its vision of the Intelligent Community of the 21st century and the Future of Work, while the Mobile World Capital presentation focused on the Smart City Initiative set up in the city of Barcelona. The panel drew attention to the growing interest in the smart cities sector among financial and VC companies, as smart industries are now attracting numerous innovative start-ups.
