Peter Musgrove

Lead Member of Technical Staff, AT&T

Mr. Peter Musgrove is a Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T with 33 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. He started his career with Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) in 1986 in Red Bank, NJ where he developed generic requirements and the associated standards for SS7-based services. In 1994, he joined McCaw Cellular in Kirkland, WA (which was later acquired by AT&T).

Peter has developed network standards for wireless and wireline telecom including regulatory standards supporting 911 emergency services and Next Gen 911, Real-Time Text, domestic and international lawful interception, Wireless Priority Service for Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) users, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), and other public safety initiatives in ATIS, TIA, and 3GPP. Peter has participated in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) industry activities in GSMA, 3GPP, ATIS, and ASTM. Peter holds a BS Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Virginia, and an MS Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech.

Mark Thirman

Global Connected Edge Strategy, IBM Consulting

Mark joined IBM in 2021 looking at global IoT, 5G, Edge, and AI technologies and business strategy. He has over 30 years of experience in executive roles at a broad range of telephony, infrastructure, and networking companies. Prior engagements include: global IoT strategy for a global leader in insights and data analytics and Amazon Web Services (IoT), Cloud Technology Partners, TELUS, Freewave, and others. Previously he served at Vodafone as VP of IoT Americas. Mark is the Vice Chair of the board of the MIT Enterprise Forum (MITEF) Cambridge, and chairs the annual Connected Things Conference held at the MIT Media Lab. He also chairs the board at VR pioneer ROTU Media & Entertainment.

He is a frequent speaker on the topic of IoT/Connected Things at conferences and events. Mark has been a guest lecturer at MIT, Tufts University, Boston University, and other universities. At Tufts, Mark currently oversees four Master’s Candidates researching their thesis (capstone) projects on IoT topics and is leading his 16th Summer Practicum for a team of graduate students researching IoT issues.

He co-hosts the highly-rated “Failure the Podcast” series as well as many podcasts for MITEF Cambridge’s annual Connected Things conference. Previously, he co-hosted 29 podcasts called the “Tech Entrepreneur.

Matt Hatton

Founding Partner, Transforma Insights

Matt is a well-respected commentator and technology industry expert with 25 years’ experience at the cutting edge of technology research and consulting. He is a thought-leader in Telecommunications, Digital Transformation and the Internet of Things. He is widely quoted in trade publications and frequent speaker at conferences. In 2020 Matt co-wrote a book ‘The Internet of Things Myth’.

Matt is currently Founding Partner at Transforma Insights, the leading advisors on IoT, AI and Digital Transformation. Previously he was Founder and CEO of Machina Research, which was acquired by Gartner in 2016. Prior to founding Machina Research Matt was a technology industry analyst, working at firms including Analysys Mason and Yankee Group.

Matt holds an MSc in Telecoms from University College London.

Barbara Pareglio

Senior Technical Director, Smart Mobility Lead, GSMA

Since 2014, she has been the technical lead for several areas of focus within the GSMA such as 5G, IoT, automotive, aviation and more. Looking at how to best utilise new technologies and services from the constantly evolving mobile networks, like 5G-Advanced.

Barbara is also leading several activities and communities with the GSMA members, like the activities related to smart mobility, including automotive and advanced air mobility. The latter by leading the GSMA Drone Interest Group and the Aerial Connectivity Joint Activity, to investigate and help the mobile industry to create a trusted solution for commercial unmanned aircraft. Exploring features and capabilities of 4G and 5G needed for the aviation.

Barbara has over 20 years of experience in the mobile industry. Before joining the GSMA, Barbara worked in R&D in several areas of telecommunications. She also participates and actively contributed to, several standards.

Shamik Mishra

Vice President and CTO Connectivity, Capgemini Engineering

Shamik Mishra currently serves as Vice President and CTO of Connectivity at Capgemini Engineering. In addition to this, he also leads the Capgemini technology domain, “connected futures” as the CTIO. As a global lead for technology and innovation, Shamik drives the connectivity technology portfolio for 5G, virtualization, cloud native, edge computing, intelligent networks, and carrier cloud platforms.

Previously he was the Vice President for Research and Innovation and Global Chief Industry Architect for Altran’s telecommunication business before the acquisition by Capgemini in 2019.

Shamik has over twenty-one years of experience in the telecom and software industry, providing engineering R&D services, frameworks and solutions to telecom operators, network equipment providers and software firms around the world.  He has represented Capgemini Engineering at several industry forums including Linux Foundation Edge where he is a member of the technical advisory council. He has been elected the deputy chairman for GSMA’s Operator Platform Group. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Open Compute Project. Shamik is a regular speaker at industry and academic conferences and is often covered by the industry media.

He has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mathematics and Computing from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India

Leonid Burakovsky

Senior Director of Product Management, Palo Alto Networks

Leonid Burakovsky currently serves as a Senior Director of Product Management at Palo Alto Networks.  Leonid pioneered a new area of products to strengthen 4G and 5G security. He is a co-inventor and an author of 30+ granted 5G/4G security patents. Leonid contributed to the Open Ran Policy Coalition “Open RAN security in 5G” April 2021 paper. Leonid also initiated and led the creation of the new GSMA permanent security reference document, FS.37. This document provides recommendations for Communication Service Providers to detect and prevent attacks and security threats against mobile networks, services, and applications.

Prior to this role, Leonid served as F5 Networks’ Senior Director of Service Provider Solutions and Juniper Networks’ Strategic Alliances CTO.  Leonid regularly speaks at industry forums such as IEEE, Mobile World Congress, NGMN, 4G, CTIA, Futurecom, BroadbandForum, LTE events, Intel’s Network Builders, to name a few. Leonid has more than 30 years of industry experience and holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Information Systems Engineering.

Andreas Roessler

Technology Manager, Rohde & Schwarz

Andreas Roessler is working as a Technology Manager for Rohde & Schwarz, a premium supplier of test and measurement solutions to the wireless industry, headquartered in Munich, Germany. As a technology manager, he focuses on 3GPP’s 5G New Radio (NR) standard and advancing 6G research topics. His responsibilities include strategic marketing and product portfolio development for the entire value chain offered by Rohde & Schwarz test and measurement division. By carefully following industry trends and the standardization process for cellular communication standards, he gained more than 15 years of experience in the mobile industry and wireless technologies. He holds an MSc in electrical engineering with a focus on wireless communication.

Safi Khan

Regional Product Marketing Director, Telit

Safi Khan has over 20 years of wireless semiconductor industry experience. He is a seasoned professional in product marketing, product management, and engineering development. Before joining Telit, Safi was most recently a global product manager of embedded wireless business and North America head of product marketing at Silex Technology. Prior to joining Silex, Safi held technical marketing and engineering management roles at Qualcomm. Safi has delivered several hundred million dollars in revenue through his business and technical leadership. Safi lead cross-functional teams to bring cutting-edge cellular, Wi-Fi, and multimedia technologies and products to market. Under Safi’s leadership at Qualcomm, he successfully brought several complex high-volume smartphone chips for 2G/3G/4G/LTE and MediaFLO into production. Safi holds an MBA from the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University Evanston.
