Cellular’s Role in IoT Expansion to be Key Focus of Mobile World Congress Shanghai

Over recent months, China has asserted itself as a nation at the vanguard of Mobile IoT deployments. Backed by the country’s three operators, low power wide area networks in licensed spectrum have become central to national and regional modernisation programmes. GSMAi estimate that by 2025 such connections will reach nearly 900 million, roughly a third of the nation’s total 3 billion cellular connections.

After a period of trialling this new technology in utility meters, smart parking, multipurpose, intelligent street lighting and all manner of other use cases, the nation’s operators have provided the basis for a thriving, commercial ecosystem. Companies active in this market are now in the position to speculate how Mobile IoT can complement other network technologies and thus deliver intelligently connected societies.

This will be a central theme of this year’s Mobile World Congress Shanghai, an event which is increasingly viewed as a window to the region’s upcoming technological releases. Providing a platform for twelve of the most innovative Mobile IoT developers and startups, Connected China is an opportunity to explore the latest commercial offerings in industrial IoT, fire safety, logistics, smart home smart city and also smart agriculture, which will feature an IoT smart collar that collects data on body temperature and movement of the country’s yak population.

The event’s GSMA Innovation City will host a variety of interactive demonstrations that exhibit the harmonisation of various network technologies. For example, China Mobile will demonstrate their Integrated ‘Industrial IoT Solution to Enhance Manufacturing Efficiency’, a solution that provides end-to-end support and implementation for manufacturing equipment and assets, from data collection, processing and visualisation across 5G, LTE and Mobile IoT networks. Similarly, China Unicom will showcase their ‘Intelligent Community Management for Housing & Living spaces’ which makes use of Mobile IoT and 5G technologies to visualise the distribution manpower, goods and environment can be monitored on a single UI. Following suit, China Telecom will present their ‘AI Visual Recognition and Surveillance System for Flood Prevention’. Supported by 5G, LTE and Mobile IoT, this solution uses continuous visual recognition to support AI products in flood prevention, hydroelectrics, water transfer, marine engineering and UAV disaster recovery.

On Thursday the 28th June, the event’s IoT activities will culminate in the IoT Summit, bringing together key stakeholders to exchange thoughts on issues around network security, achieving value from data analytics and market deployments. The event is free to all VIP and Gold Pass holders, and Exhibition Pass holders can purchase tickets for a top-up fee here.
