GSMA’s IoT Device Connection Efficiency Guidelines underpins Telenor’s latest collaboration

Telenor Connexion, the M2M division of operator Telenor, announced that its collaboration with Telit and Allianz Telematics to optimise IoT performance will be in accordance with the GSMA IoT Device Connection Efficiency Guidelines.
Telenor Connexion revealed that it has been working with Telit, a leading global provider of modules and services, and Allianz Telematics, a developer of telematics solutions for automotive and info-mobility markets.
The companies have been working together in Ericsson’s Radio Testing Laboratory, the first independent testing facility to work with the Guidelines since their release on 13th of October, 2014. The project has since taken a significant step forward, having now implemented a verified solution dubbed ‘Network Friendly Mode’ that optimises the behaviour of devices.
The Guidelines help IoT device and application developers expand the number of devices connecting to mobile networks, whilst preventing service outages and ensuring optimal performance that will ultimately enable the market to scale across a diverse range of sectors including automotive, transportation, utilities and health.
They are also designed to be implemented by many operators and module manufactures, which in turn will be vital in keeping the cost down, so that the cost of connectivity is shared amongst many devices.
Allianz Telematics have already adopted the IoT Device Connection Efficiency Guidelines in their Usage Base Insurance (UBI) solution in order to deliver a future-proof product and an overall customer experience, evidence that the Guidelines are already making a positive impact in the M2M space.
Though the M2M market is still developing, it is nonetheless set for rapid growth and fundamental change. Over the past year, there has been an exponential increase in the number of strategic partnerships and cross-industry collaborations in preparation for the inevitable boom in the market.
Yet these Guidelines are essential in facilitating secure and reliable networks which will constantly have to accommodate the addition of more devices, a dilemma which has until recently, abated confidence in the IoT. The announcement is an early, but significant example of how industry standards can expedite collaboration, help accelerate the growth of the IoT and ultimately unlock new revenue opportunities for a range of companies.
