With the imminent arrival of a vast new IoT ecosystem and therefore huge needs for IoT connectivity, MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) need to reassess how they optimize network resources. This is addressed by Thales Radio Policy Management platform, as described below in this document.

The IoT is set for extraordinary growth, with the use of

cellular networks: the Ericsson Mobility Report (November 2019) predicts that there will be five billion cellular IoT connections by 2023 and many of these will be enabled by an embedded SIM (eSIM). ABI Research – embedded Security for the IoT, March 3rd 2020, suggests approximately 0.9 billion eSIM-capable devices will be shipped annually by 2024.

The rapid development of the IoT is now supported by a standardized, GSMA-defined security framework. Reflecting this, Thales’ implementation of GSMA IoT SAFE is a fully interoperable and scalable solution that provides the trusted foundation for limitless IoT applications.
Once security is assured, the key to managing and monetizing this new ecosystem lies in the optimization of network resources. MNOs size their network resources according to the number of IoT devices that will potentially connect. 24/7 availability of the network must be maintained for all IoT devices that need a cellular connection. To help achieve this, MNOs need to implement robust measures to prevent networks from being overloaded by IoT devices that are behaving abnormally or when trying to connect legitimately.
This is where Thales Radio Policy Management (RPM) Platform comes into play.

Thales’ Radio Policy Management platform protects cellular networks from signaling overload caused by the abnormal behavior of IoT applications or caused by legitimate connections attempts. Operating within the framework of GSMA specifications, it offers MNOs complete control over the rules set for connection to the network by IoT devices.
