In 2018, almost 300 million people connected to mobile internet for the first time, bringing the total connected population to more than 3.5 billion people globally. Mobile internet connectivity is not, however, equitable; just over 40% of the population of low- and middle-income countries are connected, compared to almost 75% of the population in high-income countries. More than half the world’s population are therefore still unable to realise the social and economic benefits that mobile internet can enable.

In this webinar we will discuss the findings of the GSMA’s State of Mobile Internet Connectivity 2019 report, including:

  • Trends in mobile internet adoption and in the coverage and usage gaps (globally and regionally)
  • How and why mobile broadband coverage accelerated in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2018
  • Trends in the affordability of mobile services and handsets
  • The gender gap and the rural-urban mobile internet connectivity gap
  • Insights from the GSMA Intelligence consumer survey, including consumer perception of the key barriers to mobile internet adoption and understanding what they use mobile internet services for

We will also give you a demonstration of the GSMA Mobile Connectivity Index (MCI) web tool, which measures the performance of 165 countries against the key enablers of mobile internet adoption: infrastructure; affordability; consumer readiness; and content and services.
