Dedicated to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and connecting everyone and everything to a better future, mobile operators are transforming millions of people’s lives. To tell these stories of human impact, the #CaseForChange is packed with the latest tech and travelling around the world. Launched at MWC Americas in September and culminating at Mobile World Congress 2018 in February, the journey will cross 19 countries and cover over 130,000km to capture the most powerful stories of human change, all backed by mobile.

Education is proven to be the best way to improve the livelihood of the millions of Latin-Americans still living in poverty. And mobile is the most powerful tool to bring education to those looking to gain more knowledge.

That is the story we wanted to highlight with this new episode of the #CaseForChange journey. We visited Mexico with YouTuber Mariel de Viaje to showcase some of the amazing stories from Mexican users of Aprende.org, which has transformed their lives thanks to mobile education.

Aprende.org is a platform by the Carlos Slim Foundation that brings educational and training tools within the reach of everyone through any mobile device. Mobile data is free for the platform, meaning everyone with Telcel SIM has the opportunity to study and learn for free from anywhere. It provides a range of free courses on everything from culture, art, and mathematics, to Spanish, economics, health, training and skills development.

Can a mobile phone unlock a better future? Aprende.org showed us that it really can. We visited several young Mexicans in communities of the Michoacan state. They told us how the Aprende.org courses helped them learned how to install solar panels for off the grid villages (starting a social business out of it), learn first aid to start thinking of a medical career and improve more than 15% the productivity of their crops (in this case a very tasty but spicy chili!).

“The beauty of Aprende is that there are hundreds of different courses to help you develop your skills”, they told us. It was amazing to see how a passion for learning was ultimately transforming their lives.

We also visited Aprende.org offices in Mexico City, where we met the passionate young professionals working every day to make sure any person in Latin America can have access to the best educational resources. Everything in Aprende.org platform was developed in house, from design, research and layout, to video, audio, and the list goes on. Yet another benefit of the platform – its development and maintenance is giving jobs to local people.

There is still a lot to be done to ensure every community in Latin America can prosper, but for the Carlos Slim Foundation and America Móvil, it begins with making modern and high-level education available free to everyone, everywhere, at anytime.
