Emergence BioEnergy, Inc. (EBI) received a Seed grant from the M4D Utilities Innovation Fund in January 2014 to validate the operational and commercial feasibility of using a small-sized, low maintenance, biogas-fuelled Stirling engine to reliably provide power to a telecom tower and the surrounding community. EBI made progress towards the goal but several technical and operational challenges eventually led to the shutdown of not just the project but also the company. Nevertheless, important lessons were learned about validating a hardware-centric technology where limited technical expertise is available.
