Mobisol received a grant from the M4D Utilities Innovation Fund in November 2013 to replicate its innovative mobile-enabled energy business in Rwanda with a focus on entrepreneurial systems for customers to generate income. Through a partnership with MTN Rwanda, Mobisol’s use of mobile money and remote control and monitoring demonstrate the power of mobile technology for pay-as-you-go solar to increase energy access for the underserved, and the commercial benefits to mobile operators. This Case Study highlights the successes and challenges faced along the way and presents the key lessons learned from the grant.
