Mobile is increasingly becoming a powerful tool and a way of life in emerging economies. At the end of 2020, half a billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa subscribed to mobile services. This accounts for over 45% of the population. Thus, connectivity is driving digital transformation on the continent and provides a convenient platform to facilitate access to a plethora of services including healthcare, financial, and social protection services. However, for people to remotely access the countless identity-linked services from their mobile gadgets, they must have a trusted digital ID to prove that they are who they say they are and this has truly accelerated demand for high assurance and secure digital ID, particularly in emerging economies.

Given the ubiquity of mobile networks, MNOs’ compliance with existing anti-money laundering (AML) laws, SIM registration regulations, anti-terrorism (CFT) legislation as well as Know Your Customer (KYC) ID verification procedures, the mobile industry presents unprecedented levels of opportunities in developing or accelerating the development of digital identity solutions in Sub Saharan Africa. Read this report to understand the digital ID landscape in selected markets in Sub Saharan Africa, key actors, policy challenges and opportunities, and the potential role of mobile-enabled digital IDs in enhancing service delivery in a socially impactful manner.
