Birth Registration in Tanzania: Tigo’s support of the new mobile birth registration system image

In addition to establishing a child’s identity, birth registration acts as a key enabler for a multitude of development outcomes including access to healthcare, education and social protection. Mobile technology has an increasingly important role to play in speeding up progress with birth registration and the provision of unique identities to the most underserved, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where more than half of all children do not have their births registered before the age of five. This case study provides an overview of Tigo Tanzania’s support of the country’s new mobile birth registration process, which is expected to register over one million births by the end of 2016.
