Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) services have been hugely successful in supporting clean energy solutions, with PAYG solar sales exceeding 1.6 million by mid-2017. The growth of PAYG solar, concentrated in East Africa, has driven entrepreneurs to replicate the model in other geographies and sectors. This report is a follow-on from our previous report, ‘Lessons from the use of mobile in utility pay-as-you-go models’. Here, we focus on the opportunities and challenges involved in replicating PAYG mobile-enabled solutions in “greenfield” markets that include means new geographies for PAYG solar lighting solutions beyond East Africa, as well as new sectors such as water, sanitation, cooking and solar irrigation.
