Webinar On Demand: Driving Mobile Digital Skills Development

Mobile is the primary and often only way of accessing internet in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), enabling access to life-enhancing services, driving economic growth, and creating opportunities for citizens and businesses to thrive.

Despite these significant gains, over half the world’s population is still not connected. In 2019, 3.4 billion people who lived in areas covered by mobile broadband were still not accessing mobile internet services; 93% of whom live in LMICs.

Across LMICs, the biggest barrier preventing mobile users from using mobile internet, despite being aware of it, is a lack of literacy and digital skills.

In this webinar recording you’ll hear about our latest thinking and activities on mobile digital skills including:

  • Our key learnings from research on how to drive mobile digital skills development;
  • How we’ve applied these learnings to develop the GSMA’s Mobile Internet Skills Training Toolkit (MISTT);
  • An overview of how you can leverage MISTT materials and best practices to improve your users’ digital skills; and
  • Key learnings from MISTT rollouts by partners, including MTN’s Data Smart campaign.

We have supported partners in 23 countries to train over 21 million users on the basic digital skills needed to use mobile internet. These materials were created in partnership with leading technology companies including Google, Facebook, kaiOS, Wikimedia Foundation, and Ayoba.

Our goal is to support digital inclusion worldwide through innovative approaches that are commercially sustainable and socially impactful.
