Addressing the gender gap in STEM careers

Only 35% of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students in further education globally are women. Vodafone’s #CodeLikeAGirl initiative, which was launched in 2017, seeks to help address this inequality.

Vodafone has partnered with social enterprise Code First Girls to provide free coding workshops for girls aged 14 to 18 in 26 countries. The four-day workshops, which are delivered by Vodafone employees, aim to demystify computer programming and inspire young women to study and work in the digital sector. At the end of each workshop, the participants are able to build a website.

2,500 girls have attended Vodafone’s #codelikeagirl workshops over the last two years. As well as gaining technical skills and growing in confidence, the training proves to them that their gender is not a barrier.
