Creating good digital citizens in Guatemala

Digital skills are critical for the benefits of connectivity to be realised and play an important role in opening up opportunities – such as access to information – and addressing the digital divide. In Guatemala, Tigo is helping to drive digital citizenship and upskill young people and their families.

The company’s Enseñanza Tecnológica programme, which was set up in 2017, identifies online risks, develops educational materials and provides good practice guidance for parents, teachers and children. In 2019, the programme has encouraged the exchange of digital knowledge and experiences by training 1,000 teachers and reaching more than 28,000 children in public schools across Guatemala.

As Rachel Samren, Chief External Affairs Officer and Executive VP, Millicom (Tigo’s parent company), says: “Mobile technology offers a wealth of opportunities for children to learn and develop as digital citizens. But in order for them to do so, we must make sure they know how to do it safely and securely.”
