The efficient licencing process that concluded last week will see the launch of advanced mobile broadband services in the next quarter, addressing pent-up demand for broadband and catalysing economic growth in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very important step for Vietnam \u2013 technologically, economically and socially. It heralds a new era of high-speed internet access in a country where 66% of the population use a mobile phone, but only 3% can use broadband at home,\u201d said Ricardo Tavares, SVP Public Policy, GSM Association. \u201cThailand is now the only Southeast Asian country left to licence mobile broadband spectrum. Numerous studies have demonstrated the direct correlation between broadband penetration and economic growth and we call on Thailand to embrace mobile broadband as Vietnam has done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four companies are now licenced to run mobile broadband services in Vietnam: Viettel, Vinaphone, MobiFone and a consortium including EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the GSMA<\/strong><br \/>\nThe GSMA represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry.\u00a0Spanning 219 countries and territories, the GSMA unites more than 750 of the world\u2019s mobile operators, as well as 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies, and media and entertainment organisations.
