eSIM Services

The introduction of eSIMs, which can be populated and re-populated post-production, has been the largest fundamental change to device personalisation and customer account identification since the physical SIM was introduced in the early 90s. The GSMA has developed a standardised approach to eSIM management to ensure an efficient and interoperable global ecosystem applicable to all industry participants.  The momentum of eSIM adoption is accelerating, with at least 158 mobile service providers already offering eSIM services for smartphones spanning more than 60 countries (Source GSMAi eSIM Report June 2020). The GSMA is providing two new eSIM services to underpin the open operation of the ecosystem.

As defined and requested in SGP.29, GSMA EID Definition and Assigment, the GSMA now has First Level EID Assignment Authority responsibility for coordinating the issuance and use of the eUICC identification numbers of those manufacturers that follow new EID structure defined in SGP.29.  To support this aim we have introduced the GSMA eUICC Identity Scheme (eIS) to provide eUICC manufacturers with the unique code allowing them to produce globally unique eUICC serial numbers.  This scheme complements the existing ITU E.118 scheme.

GSMA eSIM Discovery will provide a global operator and device manufacturer agnostic service enabling eSIM-enabled consumer devices to identify where to acquire their subscriber profile.
