These tools are already empowering banks,&nbsp;fintechs, and enterprises to verify identities, prevent fraud, and deliver seamless, secure services to their users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with this capability comes a deep responsibility&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;to ensure that innovation respects and protects individual privacy.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;not just about compliance;&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;about doing what\u2019s right for the people who rely on these technologies every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-nbsp-role-of-nbsp-the-nbsp-gsma-setting-the-nbsp-privacy-nbsp-principles-nbsp\"><strong>The&nbsp;role of&nbsp;the&nbsp;GSMA: Setting the&nbsp;privacy&nbsp;principles<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;GSMA plays&nbsp;a central role&nbsp;in shaping the privacy landscape for&nbsp;the&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;world. These principles are based on internationally accepted data protection norms and include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transparency&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>User choice and control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data minimisation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accountability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than&nbsp;focusing&nbsp;&nbsp;on&nbsp;one&nbsp;single regulation, GSMA takes a principles-based approach that can be adapted across&nbsp;jurisdictions. This flexibility is essential in a world where privacy laws\u2014from the EU\u2019s&nbsp;General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)&nbsp;to India\u2019s Digital Personal Data Protection Act\u2014vary widely in scope and enforcement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consumer-nbsp-trust-in-the-api-ecosystem-nbsp\"><strong>Consumer&nbsp;trust in the API ecosystem<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security and privacy are interconnected&nbsp;principles&nbsp;and&nbsp;reinforce each other.&nbsp;Robust security measures protect personal data from unauthorised access or data&nbsp;leaks&nbsp;and strong privacy practices ensure data is handled responsibly.&nbsp;As Tooba Kazmi clarifies: \u201cTogether, security and privacy&nbsp;enable each other. Both are necessary to build trust,&nbsp;empower individuals and&nbsp;safeguard user rights.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take anti-fraud APIs, for example. These tools rely on data points like SIM swap events, device identifiers, or call metadata to detect suspicious activity. In other regions, the bar&nbsp;may be&nbsp;lower&nbsp;or defined differently altogether. Add to that telecom-specific regulations in many countries&nbsp;that&nbsp;apply specifically to mobile operators, and you get a complex compliance landscape that can slow down or even block API adoption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result? Most enterprises deploy APIs market by market, rather than globally. Some take a \u201chighest common denominator\u201d approach. Others tailor their deployments to local rules, which can be more efficient but harder to scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-privacy-enhancing-nbsp-technologies-nbsp-the-next-frontier-nbsp\"><strong>Privacy-enhancing&nbsp;technologies:&nbsp;The next frontier<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To navigate this complexity, many operators are turning to Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs),&nbsp;tools that allow&nbsp;personal&nbsp;data to be used without exposing it, a model supported by the GSMA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key PETs gaining traction include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Zero-Knowledge Proofs:&nbsp;Which allow one party to prove something to another without revealing the underlying data.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Differential Privacy:&nbsp;Which adds statistical noise to datasets to protect individual identities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Homomorphic Encryption:&nbsp;Which enables computation on encrypted data without decrypting it.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These technologies are especially promising for fraud prevention, where real-time insights are critical but personal data must remain protected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-preventing-nbsp-function-creep-nbsp\"><strong>Preventing&nbsp;function creep<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another&nbsp;aspect&nbsp;relevant&nbsp;in the API space is function creep,&nbsp;the risk that data collected for one purpose (e.g. fraud prevention) could be repurposed for another (e.g. marketing).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this, Open Gateway APIs embed&nbsp;the&nbsp;purpose and legal basis&nbsp;for processing any personal data&nbsp;into the API specification itself. This means that if an API is designed for fraud detection under a legitimate interest basis, it&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;be quietly repurposed for unrelated uses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While&nbsp;compliance&nbsp;ultimately lies&nbsp;with the operator, this privacy-by-design architecture helps ensure that APIs are used as intended&nbsp;and that trust&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;eroded by misuse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transparency-nbsp-and-accountability-nbsp-more-than-buzzwords-nbsp\"><strong>Transparency&nbsp;and accountability:&nbsp;More than buzzwords<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transparency is one of GSMA\u2019s core privacy principles, but what does it look like in practice?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While GSMA&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;mandate specific mechanisms like audits or dashboards, it encourages&nbsp;mobile&nbsp;operators to&nbsp;clearly explain how APIs work and what data they use, provide accessible privacy&nbsp;notices&nbsp;and offer meaningful user controls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important in a world where consumer expectations are rising. If users feel their data is being used in opaque or overly broad ways, trust&nbsp;can&nbsp;break down\u2014even if the use is technically legal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-nbsp-bridges-across-the-ecosystem-nbsp\"><strong>Building&nbsp;bridges across the ecosystem<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data privacy&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;just a legal or technical issue&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a collaborative one.&nbsp;The&nbsp;GSMA plays a vital role in bringing together<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>operators, enterprises and developers, regulators and policymakers&nbsp;and technology providers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through initiatives like GSMA Fusion, the organisation helps align industry needs with regulatory expectations.
